Re: Texas Breakdown
2ndovc, I have never owned a Concours. They do have a dedicated following but the one negative that keeps coming up is that they are "buzzy" and the bars and pegs will put your hands and feet to sleep in short order. Second hand info so don't know if it's a real issue.

Re: Short range report with the .357s
Glad to hear you're doing better, YK. My wife had it although two of the at-home tests she took were negative. My son and his wife got it as well but they're over it now. If I had it, the symptoms were very mild. Being in close proximity with my family, I can't imagine that I didn't have it as well.

Re: Greetings from British Columbia...eh
I have heard more and more good stuff about the Rossi model 92. I may have to take a closer look at them. My only levergun in .357 is a Henry Iron. It's a very well-made firearm; the fit is darn near perfect and the stock is beautiful. I'm old fashioned so I would have preferred a side loader but it...

Re: What is your most useful levergun?
I have a JM Marlin model 94 Cowboy with octagonal 24" barrel that may be my most useful levergun. With different loads it is very versatile, going from mild cowboy rounds to kickin' 300 grain cast rounds moving out at 1300 fps. I have a Skinner peep sight in the rear, a tall Skinner blade in fr...

Re: Texas Breakdown
I rode an 84 model R80RT for years but finally sold it because I had bought an R1100R which has way more power, better suspension and way better brakes. I still ride that and regularly get 52 mpg. The guy who bought the R80 came up all the way from Marfa, TX to north central NM to buy the bike. I ga...

Re: Texas Breakdown
I had an early KLR, a 600cc before the 650s came out. It was a 80/20 street/off road bike in my opinion. It was pretty heavy and I didn't think the front end geometry was very good on dirt roads. I now have a Suzuki DRZ400S which doesn't have the top end of the KLR but it's much lighter and a better...

Cool car! My first car was an Austin Healey Bug Eye Sprite. That was a small car....you could hang your arm over the door and touch the ground.
Congratulations!
Congratulations!

Re: Short range report with the .357s
Hey 2ndovc, have you ever used all-copper Chore Boy to get the lead out? It's something that Bill Wilson recommended in his book, "The Combat 45 Auto". I cut off a piece and wrap it around a worn out bore brush and it works great because the edges are sharp. Being much softer than the bore...

Re: Sights that I can see.
Nice shooting and nice gun, Scott. I am a revolver afficionado so very few have dovetailed front sights. I haven't experimented with various paint colors yet but it's becoming increasingly obvious that I need to do that. I have widened the rear sight notch on several guns, though and it seems to hel...

I find it interesting that for an equal powder charge, 429244 bullets are quite a bit slower than 429421 bullets.

I sold my Ruger Tropical Rifle in .458 so would take my Winchester in .375 H & H and also my Guide Gun loaded with 500gr hard cast bullets.

Re: Game Slugs for .44 and .45
For lower velocity calibers like .44 special and .45 Colt, I use machine cast bullets from SNS Casting. It's a good outfit, they do 2 day shipping with outstanding packaging and I order 1,000/box. My 624 likes their 240 grain RNFP bullets over 8 grains of Power Pistol for about 960 fps, SD of 8 to 1...

Model 94 .375 Winchester
After having lived in my safe for quite a while, I took out my Model 94 Big Bore in .375 Winchester and blasted some gongs this morning. I normally space the gongs up a hillside from 45 yards to about 70 yards, the smallest (and farthest) is about 8" in diameter, the remainder from 10" to ...

My casting setup. I made a cart many years ago, fitted with casters so that I can roll it out of the way without the hot lead splashing. The furnace and the heat sink are on a wooden box containing a squirrel cage fan which blows across the top surface of the heat sink as well as through the fins un...

Re: OT Honda Ridgeline
I drove 2 wheel drive 4 cylinder Toyota pickups for years because of their reliability and low overall costs. I retired from my travelling sales career (43 years) several years ago. One of my first was an '87 pickup, ending up with 440K miles. The next one was a 2000 extended cab Tacoma and I wanted...

Re: R.J Renner Ruger #1
It's truly a beautiful rifle! The caliber is interesting too. I have an old Mauser chambered in .22-250 and the barrel is shot out. I'm seriously considering rebarreling it to .35 Whelan or maybe .35 Whelan AI. Elmer Keith called it the poor man's .375 H & H. That's a pretty strong endorsement c...

Re: Win vs Rem vs Starline brass?
I don't think there's any doubt that John Linebaugh is an authority on high pressures in handguns and therefore brass as well. In his writings he considers Starline and Federal to be the strongest brass on the market. Winchester is a bit down his list and Remington is below that. There's unquestiona...

Our son lives in Conroe, just north of Houston. He has a co-worker who has a deer management farm and he exerts himself to maximize the benefits of his property to the welfare of the deer. There is a large population of feral pigs which partake of the feeders meant for the deer. Therefore the owner ...

Re: MBW 270SAA loading
I have an RCBS 270 grain SAA mold which casts some beautiful bullets. Old Elmer would have liked them because the grease groove is flat-bottomed and large enough to hold plenty of lube and the bands are in fact .10" wide and evenly spaced and of full diameter. I load on a Dillon 550 and normall...

Early this year I ordered several bullet molds from Accurate Mold Company and I have been very pleased with them. The company has hundreds of mold designs stored in their CNC machine but customers can also submit their own designs. The molds are available in iron, aluminum and brass and I chose alum...

Alliant claims that Titegroup is a position-insensitive powder, therefor ideal in large capacity cases like .45 Colt. I have shot 6.2 grains in various Rugers and Colts with good results, getting about 850 fps with standard deviations of around 16 fps. My bullets of choice in low pressure .45 Colt l...

Re: Scott's Nose-Damaged Bullets Got Me To Thinking
In the 4th edition of Lyman's Cast Bullet Handbook there's an informative article by Mike Venturino regarding accuracy of cast bullet loads in benchrest rifle shooting. He states that the base of the cast bullet is its rudder and that it's relatively unimportant if the nose of the bullet has slight ...
