The cartridge was the "408 WINCHESTER". I have a SAAMI spec sheet for it approved on 7-1-65. I'll scan it and try to figure out how to post it. The case is .445" at .200" ahead of the bolt face. That makes it a 220 SWIFT case but with a larger rim.

Had a 2000 Malibu with 3.1, did the same thing. Spent 2 days tearing the engine down and installing new intake manifold gaskets. Use a digital camera to record where all the darn wires and hoses go.

A couple of years ago, a young female moose spent a few days with my cousins heifers in Bainbridge. She was kinda hard on fences. Two years ago while hunting north of Cranberry Lake, there was quite a few moose tracks near my friends camp.

SAAMI has separate specs for 44 MAG handguns and rifles.

The SAAMI spec groove diameter for 44 MAG handguns is .429".

The SAAMI spec groove diameter for 44 MAG rifles is .431".

Perhaps the blame should be with SAAMI for approving a larger groove diameter for rifles??

Huntington Die Specialties has new Norma 303 SAVAGE cases. The only case that can readily be formed to 303 SAVAGE is the 220 SWIFT. It has the correct base diameter. You have to headspace the formed cases off the shoulder because the rim is thinner.
