I use a 25 caliber nylon brush for quick cleaning's.

Try a 25 caliber bronze bristle bore brush, remember as with any metal brush do not reverse brush in the chamber or bore.

A bore snake works very well also.

For a nice target/light load try, 3.9 grains of Unique with a 158 grain RN or TR lead bullet. This is from the Alliant suggested Cowboy loading for .357. Using .357 cases.

This is a very accurate load I shoot it in a Ruger three screw 6 1/2". It also shoots very well in a Marlin 94CB.

A short 444 ?

Why not shoot a 44 mag. ?

44 Mag. would be approx. same length as 44-40.

Mag. is a stronger case.

Some shooter's are using 44 Russians in 44-40's. :roll:

Slug your bore. Your are most likely using undersized bullets. To stop that you need to shoot bullets more closely sized to the cylinder throats, & bore groove diameter.

Take it from one who has been here before. :wink:

I use a #35 shell holder for 44-40, I also have a # 38 it works as well as the #35.

Y'all got to see this. He does it with a Marlin Lever Gun. Not a stock piece I might add. This is a full race Rifle. I watched him shoot at the Cowboy U.S. Championships this past March. It sound like a Machine Gun.

If you don't shoot BP why would you need a barrel that long ?

With the modern powders we have now all the powder is burned in the first 18" to 20" of barrel. This is one reason they stopped installing the long barrels in the first quarter of the last Century.

I would work up the load using a Magnum large rifle powder, 2400 likes lots of ignition. I always used a magnum primer when I used 2400 in pistol reloading.

Buy a 92, Winchester 94's run revolver cartridge's not so good. The Winny 94 was designed for long rifle cartridges. The 92 is designed for shorter types.

FWIW;

My new 3rd Gen. 44-40's have a front sight that is .302 from the top of the barrel and shoot POA at 25 yards with a 200 gr bullet.
