I am surprised nobody mentioned Unique's great ability in the .45 ACP if you want some hard hitting loads. Yes; those plastic bullets can be re-used. However, they are more powerful that most people believe. A hit at the wrong place can be fatal to many creatures; possibly even a human.
That said, they are great fun when used properly. Thay can also be wonderfully accurate.

Your story is wonderful - and it reminds me of my own 1966 Christmas; my fourth Christmas away from family while in the Navy. My Christmas that year was much different; yet, for me it remains one of the most memorable.

Single actions have had "small" sight adjustments made by bending the blade. For a small adjustment, the barrel can be held in a padded vice and the blade "tapped" with a small, smooth faced, brass hammer. Ain't hard, so don't hit it too hard!
