I just tested the case capacity of a Starline 44-40 case. 27.3 grs of IMR 4198 leaves enough room for a bullet, but it is lightly compressed. I plan on reducing to 25 grs to start.

I use a Lee factory crimp die to complete the loads. I'm still using my old Rockchucker and hand measuring each round with Lee dippers. I don't load enough to justify a Dillon 550.

I'm using new Winchester brass sized to 1.920". I don't believe that the load is totally compressed, but the bullet is surely resting on the powder. This should not present a problem, though. Heck, I use compressed loads in my straight walled .45 caliber rifles all the time.

It's in the design, but I don't have to hit the lever bottom stroke too hard. You have to complete the cycle for the action to do it's job. I did disassemble my gun and polish the internals so maybe that helped some.

Pull the stock and you will probably find that the upper tang had broken and a later 94 tang was welded onto it. This might explain the lack of the top tang hole. Whatever, Winchester DID NOT install unmarked upper tangs on the model 1894.

Never heard of that rule, Dennis. Most of the restrictions pertain to handguns and any "concealable" weapon. As far I know, rifles and shotguns may be sent by any out of state party to an FFL holder in the state of CA.
