Re: OT - want to buy a small 4wd tractor

My Kubota L3400 I mentioned above is a geared model. I also use a hydro John Deere for some of the prairie restoration work I do for the state. I much prefer the geared model. Just me, I guess. The geared Kubotas have a 'quick shift' lever in addition to the regular manual transmission lever. The qu...

Re: OT - want to buy a small 4wd tractor

I have a Kubota L3400 that I bought new about five years ago. It has been great and I have not had a single issue with it. The L series Kubotas are heavy enough to be really tough, yet small enough to fit through the tight spots on my wood roads. One of the better investments I have made. It will ce...

Re: OT Questions about IDPA/USPSA

I shot a 1911 in IDPA and so did most of my fellow shooters. There are several classes in each shoot, one of which is Custom Defense Pistol that includes 1911s (most of which were stock, BTW).

Absolutely TERRIBLE!!!!!!!! Good ear protection is a must. Shooting without protection will leave a lasting impression. That is one reason I generally use the WRF cartridges when hunting.

Re: OT-S&W M48 22 Magnum

I have a 648, the stainless version of you 48. Mine has a 6" barrel and I love it. I did some chrono testing some time ago and found that it provides more than double the energy than a 6" long .22 lr handgun. Its energy readings were also about 20% more than a .22lr out of a rifle barrel. ...

Re: A Favorite Woods Walking Gun - Browning 53 32-20

The pictured 32-20 is one of my favorite guns for carrying around our acreage at leisure. I was checking on some of my glade plantings this morning when this young squirrel presented itself. He will become part of an upcoming dinner, along with some of his buddies. I bought this Browning 53 when it...

Re: Thou shall not ignore thy mag tube.....

My 1894 .44 is less than a year old. I had a lot of feeding problems when I bought it. I finally took off the mag tube and peered down it, only to find it was very 'out of round' about half way down the tube. The follower was hanging up, not allowing any or very limited spring pressure on the cartri...

Re: A Favorite Woods Walking Gun - Browning 53 32-20

I am sorry, I don't really remember what I used to strip the Browning finish off other than it was something from a local hardware store. The can said it would remove epoxy finishes - it did. I also used it (or something similar) to strip the finish from a Citori. It took lots of 'wait time' for the...

Re: A Favorite Woods Walking Gun - Browning 53 32-20

Thanks, it is quite accurate. My only complaint with it is that it is quite 'short chambered', making the use of some bullets impossible. If the bullets don't begin their taper immediately after the cannelure, they won't work. An example that won't work are XTPs. Sierra jacketed bullets have the sam...

Re: 357 Levergun vs 30 Carbine vs AR15 - Which for HD?

I have all three around here (lever gun is a .44, though), and it is the M1 carbine loaded with Remington softpoints that I keep at ready. It is fast to get into action, it is very 'pointable' without using the sights (double taps on 10-15 yard IDPA targets are amazingly easy), and my wife finds it ...

Re: Marlin 1894 breech bolt fit

My understanding is that Marlin used to have a couple of milled cuts toward the front of the bolt for gas escape should a primer burst. Recently that have elimentated these cuts and adjusted the bolts so they look as though they are not quite closed all the way. You will probably also notice a gap a...

Re: .22LR 200 yard shooting

My copy was given to my grandfather on April 4, 1929 by his mother. My copy has seen a LOT of wear. He was in in 20's at the time and very active in small-bore shooting at the Ludlow Fish and Game Club near Springfield, MA. A trophy he won shooting at that club in 1938 sits on my desk right now. He ...

Re: .22LR 200 yard shooting

Formal competition with .22s at 200 yards used to be a very common event in the early part of the last century, including matches at Camp Perry. I have a wonderful old book printed in 1927 and written by E.C. Crossman that goes into great detail. This book, Small Bore Rifle Shooting , discusses targ...

Re: cold temps and 22s

I have had terrible luck hunting with some brands of ammo in cold (10-15 degree F) temeratures, particular with Wincherster Super-X. The bullets often became so slow I could see the bullet leave the barrel and curve sharply to the ground. Sounded like a BB gun and my 10/22 would not cycle, of course...

1894ss and .44 Special Overall Cartridge Length

I've been thinking about buying one of these, but when I read Marlin's minimum cartridge length for .44 specials in this gun I get worried. Marlin recommends a minimum length of 1.535 inches, yet my favorite .44 special load is with a Hornaday 240 XTP at a length of 1.475 with the bullet properly se...

Re: ATTN....Public Range Users....Firearm Theft Technique

If we had to pay supervisors to watch over all our public ranges in Missouri, the ranges would soon close. Most of our Conservation Department rural ranges are unsupervised, and many are not used much during most of the year. I drive by one of these ranges a couple times a week on weekdays (includin...

Technically, they are weeds because they are not native to Missouri. The pretty blue flowers are chickory, a native of Eurasia and quite an invasive species in some areas. But they are still pretty!

National Forest carry of fully loaded guns is legal in most parts of the country. A very few individual states have placed some restrictions on it. It is ok with the Feds, though.

Thanks for the welcome, thoughts, and photos. Still don't know if I am going to get a 1894C or a 1894SS - I have handguns that will match with each. I might have to go with the 1894SS because this will be mainly a truck gun and I live in a rather humid area. I have a an old steel, straight-tubed Wea...

Scoped Marlin 1894C - Questions About Scoping

I am a new member here, though I have read these pages often and enjoyed them greatly. Right now my only levers are a Browning 53 (32-20) and a Winchester 9422. I am thinking of getting 1894C Marlin and scoping it due to my aging eyes. I can use an aperture rear sight on barrels 20 or more inches lo...
