Re: There's not just MarlinOwners, but a Rossi forum, too...!

I joined up with Ranch Dog's Rossi forum back in the spring. I think they just let me hang out there as my Navy Arms 1892 was made by Rossi. Actually for the most part, they're pretty good folks there and it's slowly taking off. As for Marlin Owners, I've been a member there since it start...

Re: I JUST GOTTA STAY OUT OF GUN SHOPS!!!!!!!

My wallet just hates it when a gun starts talking to me. Fortunately it doesn't happen much these days as I've gotten very picky over just what guns I'm willing to buy. But if a Marlin 1894 CBC in 38 Special was to show up, it'd be speaking volumes to me.

I'd have another 81 in 35 in a heartbeat. And I'm more into 357 Mag rifles these days.

Re: Taurus Thunderbolt sales find...

I've been looking at a Uberti Lightning in 357, but the Taurus is going to get a strong look as well. Anyone know if it'll hold together with full power factory ammo? I've also looked at Win 73 clones in 357, but I'm a bit concerned about the toggle links holding up with non-Cowboy 357 ammo. 44-40,...

Re: Help finding Remington 81 sight and troubleshooting ejection

Man, that brings back some memories. I had an 81 in 35 back in the early 80s. I was loading pointed 150gr bullets for it and it worked quite well on deer. My only problem with it was the occasional hot brass going down the back of my neck if I wasn't wearing a hat with a brim. I sold off most of my ...

Re: 10 gauge 2 7/8" Buckshot Loads !

I bought my H&R new around 1981. It was chambered for 3 1/2 but I mostly used 2 7/8 in it. Back then we could still use lead shot for ducks and I was reloading for it as well. I let it go in a moment of weakness to my brother and have regretted it ever since. I once loaded a 3 1/2 mag full of 2 ...

Cool! Back when you could still buy factory 2 7/8" loads, I used a lot of them in a H&R single barrel. Didn't need more than one shot with it.

The only times I've had a Marlin lock up, the loading gate screw was loose allowing the loading gate to fall into the action and jam things up.

20 years in the Navy (including a couple of tours in Pensacola so I knew about the live oaks there) and I've never seen USS Constitution. I've visited HMS Victory in Portsmouth England, but never was near enough to Boston to go see Old Ironsides.

Re: Marlin 1889 38-40 Love the old stuff!

A lot of those old blackpowder leverguns have oversize bores as they were counting on obduration of the soft lead bullets to make up the difference. When smokeless came out, the manufacturers tightened up the bores because smokeless doesn't obdurate the bullets as well. The old guns are a lot of fun...

Re: Civil War naval books? - update with book reviews

I've got A History of the Confederate Navy by Luraghi who really covered as well as any other book I've read on the subject.

Any book calling itself a history of the Mississippi River operations and doesn't cover the CSS Arkansas, is falling way short of the mark.

Stick a fork in it, hold it over the burner on a gas cook stove until burned to your liking (remember charcoal is a food group). If you're really hungry, use a bigger fork and put extras on it.

Charcoal grilled or deep fried if a gas stove isn't available.

My Rossi is one of the Navy Arms 1892s that I special ordered new in '99. 24" Octagon in 357 Mag and while a bit "clunky" when first out of the box, it soon smoothed out with use. Excellent fit and finish and highly accurate (could hit a 5 gallon bucket at 400 yards all day). I'd get ...

Re: How full do folks load the tube when in the bush?

Usually fill the tube as I've had occasions with packs of dogs running stock where I've needed to shoot several of them. With a 24" full length tube on a 357, that's quite a few rounds of ammo.
