Speaking for us few folks out in the boonies still struggling with dialup, please don't add unecessary graphics clutter. The reason I like this (at least the old) site was that I could actually use it. Sites like the CAS 76, I've totally given up on. I can go home and eat five times and have to shav...

I think they would be OK. I pulled the bullets and tested them from 1100fps to 2300fps. They open well on the low end and they flat came apart on the upper end BUT you will never see anything close to those velocities. You are not even going to see anywhere near 2100fps. The initial runs with the tw...

John Boy Thanks for the dimensions. I thought that was you that posted them before but all those old threads have vanished. Also thanks for the offer of the drawing but I have made up my mind. I will size cases and spec the reamer to match whatever comes out of the die. I had thought that if they we...

WOW, you've got more problems than a hardened neck from just the forming process. The body shouldn't have been work hardened to any great degree and it is split also; obviously from trying to conform to the oversized (in relation to the brass) chamber. I've never seen new brass split like th...

If the purpose is solely to keep the cases from splitting on the first firing, maybe annealing AFTER the forming would do a better job. Annealed before is still going to get work hardened in the process of forming. After and the stresses would be relieved and the case would easily take the shape of ...

Thanks Hobie. I'm pretty sure someone has already posted the Jamison info on the old Leverguns or maybe SASS and I just thought that you might have saved it. I did save the SASS links but they are no longer available and you can't even Google the old leverguns anymore; well at least you can't open i...

Hobie I did a search on this forum (and your blog) and didn't come up with what I wanted. It is probably on the old forum that I have zero success searching. What I need is the head and shoulder diameter of factory TenX loaded ammo. Also the distance from the front face of the rim to the ege of the ...

What you did is certainly the best way to go to not diminish the rifle's value. I agree that it doesn't look as beautiful as the rifle but they do work well. game keeper: The 71, especially in the carbine has a pretty good bark to it. I wouldn't want a tang sight on it even if one did fit without al...

I like to be able to use cast in a pinch and the 270 is not the greatest for that, at least not for hunting. My main complaint is that the 270 has no historical connection to the 95 what so ever. Yes, neither does the 35Whelen but at least it is more practical than the 270 for what I would use it fo...

If the 270 makes sense to you, you and a few others are in a definite minority  . I see little sense in a high speed 300+ yard cartridge in a gun with open sights. It will never happen because of NIH (not invented here) but the most practical cartridge that they could have chambered the 95 in ...

Good luck finding one of the 95s in 270. They were the least favorite caliber that the modern 95s were chambered in. They sold poorly and the few that did get out were targets of conversion to other cartridges like the Hawk series, or 35 Whelen, or even 405 before the 405 was a factory option. In fa...

I forgot about the narrow mouth of the Lee primer. Luckily I have one of the old, old Lee cricket primers (aluminum and one at a time) that will handle the situation. I'm leaning toward the 50 AK like you. I'll save my 348s for my estate sale  Maybe you can clear up some confusion. 1) Modified...

Somebody sure spent a lot of time making a 71 look like an 86. They must have preferred the 86 style. Even Harold Johnson preferred the 86 action in a lot of cases, especially with the 50AK. I presume that you have double checked the action serial number as being in the 71 range. Whatever the case, ...

I'm also going to take a serious look at 50-70 cases. Only problem is that they are more expensive than 50 AK. A lot of people aren't going to want to mess with long trimming sessions and the 50-70 would solve that. Also, a lot of bullets won't crimp in their designed groove with a 1.88 case though ...

Think on this a second; 1) the Xs are already hollow points 2) the hollowpoint does not get any larger as it goes down so cutting it would not increase the size of the of the hollow point. 3) when you cut it off, you will then have a much thicker jacket mouth at impact, which will impede opening rat...

I don't have any 50s to measure but the only source I have for the 50s does say a head of .565. I don't know how accurate that is but if that is a real measurement, that would be a grunt to size. That 38-40 load was published in one of the Alliant Powder reloader guides. The numbers 73sTB quoted were accurate but I don't have much faith in the data.
