Re: Here kitty kitty

Thanks pard, thought it was a bear track at first but all the tracks have round pads. I think you were right the first time Pitchy, I'm pretty sure that is a bear track. I live in Utah and chasing both bear and lions with hounds has been a passion of mine for over 30 years now, and I come across bo...

Re: What happens if 2 of 3 Presidential Candidates are out?

I think ( :o UhOh) That once someone wins the primary, they are on the ballot, unless the state chooses to pay for another primary. Now...if the national election is held, and nobody gets the 270 electoral vote necessary, it gets thrown into the House of Representatives, but I believe each state on...

Re: Early 92 action 218 Bee pressure safety

Winchester made standard 92's in 218 Bee, so if the barrel stamp seems like normal factory marking it is the factory marking. And are you sure it was rebarreled? If you haven't done it already, check your serial number against the dates of manufacture here: http://www.savage99.com/winchester1892_da...

Just try to convince this buck that grandpa's .30-30 doesn't pack enough punch.... http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/deer65.JPG My grand dad used to try to chide my uncles and others that their scoped .270's and 30/06's were just for road hunters and "them that ain't got no sneak!" He never ...

Re: My New 1894 Winchester

A friends dad restored an old .30/06 that went through a fire. He replaced the stock, reblued the barrel and action, even replaced the springs. The first shot after he put all that work into the old girl the thing blew up.......the temper had gone from the steel. As much as I love old Winchesters, I...

Re: Be careful who you "thank for their service..."

I grew up with a kid whose dad was a conscript in the German army in WWII. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and after his release brought his wife and family back to live in the U.S. He became a proud American despite never losing his heavy German accent. I wonder how many of us would ...

Re: Do you own an SKS?

I have a Chinese version that I picked up years ago for $89. The nice thing about it is that ammo is cheap plus I don't feel guilty packing it in the wet, snowy, muddy, or dusty environments, it still functions regardless of the conditions. They make for good truck guns too, where they can double fo...

I remember back in my trapping days I caught a fox that had rifle jacket fragments and two different sizes of shotgun pellets under his hide. I'm sure the old boy learned to always look over his shoulder, but apparently he never learned to watch where he stepped!

Re: Cat track size

I'm a houndsman that has hunted and guided lion hunters for 30 years. One method I use to determine how big the cat is to compare the track to the size of my fist knuckles extended. If I can easily cover the track with my fist, it is a smaller or female cat. Same size as my fist, it is an average ma...

You know, I'm much more impressed by someone taking a bull elk at 60 yards with a .38-40 than a 1,300 yard across-the-canyon shot with a long range super mag.

Well done.

Re: What does your Marlin/Winchester 30/30 group look like?

If I'm being honest 3" to 5" groups at 100 yards are the norm for my pre war 94 with buck horn sights. I have no doubt the gun is capable of tighter groups, but at 100 yards the front bead pretty well masks the entire target. I actually amazed that I can shoot as well as I do with it given...

Re: What rifle are you hunting deer with this fall?

Deer season has come and gone here in Utah. Rejecting the current craze here in the west of high tech, 1,000 yard shooters, I still prefer hunting with the same tools my grandfather used to keep the racks of the smokehouse full. Here is a picture of my 1941 M94 .30-30 from a couple of weeks ago doin...

Looking at the shape of the hammer in the schematic the hammer itself acts as a locking lug......similar to the Remington rolling block action. The hammer in the forward position, such as it is when being fired, blocks the bolt from coming back. The key is can you cycle the action with the hammer fo...

The first serial number for a 30 WCF (.30-30) rifle was 3314 with a date of 5/29/1895, and the first carbine produced in that caliber was 4787 on 6/24/1895.

Re: Am I doing it wrong? Rossi 1892 44 Mag

My own experience with using a 44 Mag carbine rifle on big game animals is that for archery type ranges (40 yards or less), I feel pretty confident in it's ability to deliver a knock out blow. Beyond that, not so much. I've killed a few deer and bear with mine, but I limit my shots to under 100 yard...

Re: I don't believe this would really blow up...

My own suspicion is that most of these reports of light loads blowing up a gun were in fact double charges. This seems the more likely scenario to me....nobody wants to believe they screwed up in their reloading process so they exonerate themselves by blaming an under charge instead.

I recall an auction fairly recently of a Winchester collectors estate sale. One of the items he had was a crate of 10 Winchester 94 SRC's unissued and still with all their original tags and bindings. Checking the reloading records of my B92 I have a load listed for Hornady 240 gr bullets......so apparently I have shot them in the past. Unfortunately, I don't remember how they performed. Judging by the powder charge however, mine was a light load most likely intended for varmints and plinking. Wh...

Those 75 grain pointed hollow points are much easier to find on the sporting goods store shelves in my area than the 70 or 86 grain jacketed flatnose bullets are. If they aren't a hazard to use in the tubular magazine of a '92 Winchester, maybe I'll just start loading them too. Did you try to see i...

Re: any body shoot a 25-20?

I have a Winchester model 1892 SRC in the caliber that is one of my favorite guns. Finding jacketed flat nosed .257 bullets for the .25-20 proved to be a problem right after I bought the rifle. Hornady makes a 60 grain bullet, Speer makes a 75 grain bullet, and Remington makes an 86 grain bullet des...
