Pete is right, 28" was the most popular but 24" were fairly common. I sold an 1881 chambered 40 cal - 40-60 Marlin - 40-65 Win with a 28' barrel, excellent bore for $1900 last month on Gunbroker That should give you a starting price on value.

Unless it is a hollow base bullet, you can't "bump up a bullet" with smokeless powder.

Had our annual winter show in Mandan, ND this weekend. It's the social event of the winter, had the friends of NRA banquet Sat. night. After many years of attending this gun show, I know most of the exibitors and all the locals that walk through so quite a bull session. I had my 9 different calibers...

I shoot a 300 gr. cast bullet over 10 gr. of Trail Boss powder in Bertram cases in an original 45-75 Win 1876. Loads seem wimpy and I haven't shot over my chrony, but I can sure wallop my 100 yd. gong.

The bolt from a 39A will fit in a 39 with little or no fitting. Then you can blast away with high velocity ammo.

180 gr. Swift Scirocco with 94.0 gr. of Reloader 25 in my 300 RUM is my go to long range gun. The bullet has worked well on elk, moose, and a few long range plains game.

Most of the dings around the takedown cam are from some bozos trying to take it apart. Bad thing is, it often messes up the serial number.

I have quit using 5744 as a black powder substitute, leaves too much residue, unburnt kernels. I'm very pleased with Trail Boss. What is your basis for the "pressure spike"?

I shoot 38 S&W Special wadcutters in my 38 Colt. I don't think there is any difference in the chambers.

Sure looks like a reblue to me. 1894s are famous for losing the blue on the receivers. I've owned a few "antique" 1894s that were almost silvered out.

John Marlin designed the first lever action to handle the 45-70 cartridge. With all the government ammo available, and often given away to the settlers by the Army...that was a big deal.

Model 1894 is marked on the top tang, 1889s aren't. Locking bolt on a 1889 comes down in front of the trigger and an 1889 has a catch to keep the finger lever against the bottom tang.

Go to the Gun Store on south Tropicana Ave. You can shoot just about anything full auto. I burned up $60 in a Thompson, but had more fun than any slot machine. Two gals were next to me shooting Uzis and you needed a bushel basket for their empties.

All Marlin 1893s were marked "Marlin Safety". In 1903 the "Marlin Safety" was moved forward to allow for 2 screws to attach a Hepburn sight.
