Any rifle with checkering that has seen a good bit of use will always have more wear on the forearm than the grip. It is the natural carrying spot. If the forearm didn't have more wear I would be wary. Looks like an honest old shooter to me.

I have a few old rifles that are over bored but have tight chambers. In the old days of black powder and soft lead the bullet would bump up. An over-sized hard cast bullet would never chamber so back to the round ball method. After determining the groove diameter, I use the correct size bullet but h...

Quality bullets of that size are easily available and very inexpensive to buy at local gunshows. I cast for my gong and silhouette rifles, but spend too much time hunting and shooting to mess around with the little bullets.

Only 38-40s and 44-40s had the trapdoor for the wooden cleaning rod. The rod was too large for a 32-20 bore so therefore no need for a trapdoor. $1500.00 would be my guess.

Pin on top is another sight point, will make your rifle shoot lower. The original sights were "gold-washed" ...made them easier to see in poor light.

Re: Question about a '76 gentlemen.
The first series of 1876s were chambered in 45-75 only so no reason to stamp caliber. The first model 1873 was chambered in only 44-40 and had no caliber designation either. You have an early issue '76. Does it have a thumb print dust cover or possibly no dust cover at all?

Here in the Dakotas the 38-70 and 40-70 go for a lot more than the 45 cals. I have a few rifles from Bill Goodman but have sent half of them back. He tends to overlook some flaws. Most of his guns have "fine aged blue" whatever the heck that means. He does give a 3 dayer with no poblems.
