I probably cast differently than others. I tend to use 1 mould and mostly use only iron. Can't stand aluminum though I have a few. I'd shoot a buff (and just about anything else!) with my 71 using either my Barnes 250gr loads at about 2100fps or my 265gr cast load at about the same velocity.

I'm a big fan of 65grs of 3100 with the 200gr Hornady. A bit over 2500fps and less than 1" groups at 100 yards. Though 60grs of 3100 is considered max for the Barnes 250gr, my rifle will only handle 58grs. For the life of me I can't remember the velocity but accuracy was a bit over 1" at 1...

I see 71's very simliar to what you are describing, at our local gunshow for usually around $1800 to $2200. Occasionally a little higher but not by much. I bought a couple in the same shape a couple years ago for $1300 a piece.

OK - lots of great replies on the carbine. My personal choice for a Marlin 44 would be 22 grains of H110 under a gaschecked 250 grain keith style hardcast bullet (linotype). That will go 1650 fps from the carbine (1511 ft lb.s fwiiw) and would be a deer killer out to whatever distance that you coul...
