Re: Opening day success with the 44 Cowboy limited
Blaine\Jerry I agree about the corlokt's but I don't believe they are available in the 44. This was a 240 gr Speer gold dot softpoint. They have opened up well and driven through on deer and coyotes for me and are bonded. I will have to go with a plan soft point soon though because I only have about...

Opening day success with the 44 Cowboy limited
Today was the opener for Connecticut rifle season. I took the day off and hunted a farm around the corner. The wood lot I usually hunt has a rock crusher operating in the field next to it so hunted a 115 acre patch that I have never done so well in. I walked in to an area that I have seen buck activ...

I have never found a revolver in my price range but have shot a few deer with a 92 rifle no problems. I also have crimped a Hornady XTP with a lee factory crimp die and it will not go anywhere. A good flat nose lead will do fine on a deer too.

Nice rifle! My neighbor has a very similar rifle with the full mag. He once shot a deer and wounded it and says its a lousy caliber and his dad warned him so. He will not sell because his inlaws gave it to him. His dad hunted with a pump in 30 Remington for years so I have to get a laugh out of them...

Nath, My Dad always said a dog is the only love money can buy. Glad you found each other. I used to take a sack of live pigeons and throw them in front of my pups while they were out happy timing. Went out after work on Thursday to hang a stand to hunt out of Friday. Once it was up I hunted out of it for two hours and looked to my right and when I looked back this small buck was right were I was just looking. Almost like he was beamed in! Re: Decisions. 45 colt or 45-70?
I have the 45/70 and love it! That said a 45 colt in a rifle can be loaded to 45/90 bp ballistics with 300 gr bullets so it makes a good showing for itself. Brass is cheap, bullets on hand a lot of plus's. Also the 1894 is a sweet gun to carry. The down side is if you feed a hot 300 gr into a handgu...

Elmer Keith told of a friend who shot through a Black bears head with a load of 10 gr of Unique and the 255 gr bullet during a charge. If you can shoot the 250 gr at 850 fps beats fingers and bare hands.
If you don't shoot well, it may not matter.

I do what Walks with Gun does. It works well and after a few years the middle forms a peat moss type matl. that fills in the cracks, bullets seem to fall out the front has the wood is shot up. I put a 1 foot thick section of a log 18" in dia out in front to tack targets to.

The 32 is 1in 16 twist and one advantage to that is it will shoot cast bullets very well. Also I have read, the story of worn barrels in the 32 cause them to shoot bad isn't the total truth. One writer stated they don't shoot any worse than a 30 WCF that was worn.
