To further confuse matters, I have owned 336 rifles made as early as 1955 that were factory drilled and tapped for scope mounts.

The 336CB 38-55 is indeed a rare rifle and $700 is a good price for one in mint condition. The 336CB 30-30 is even harder to find. I have owned both and they are excellent pointing rifles. The 38-55 are notoriously variable in the actual bore size. I have heard of examples ranging from .376 to .379....

Yours is definitely a 99F. If is has a tang safety it is valuable. It is has a lever safety it is extremely valuable especially if it is in great condition. You will have not trouble selling it if you decide you dont like it.

18" at 100yds :( . That is not good. I have never heard of one being that inaccurate. Were your scope mounts loose etc? Which model do you have the, the straight gripped "Brush Gun" or the pistol gripped 99F?

I remember watching it on PBS with my son a couple of years ago. I remember him shooting a nice dall ram with a spoterized 03 Springfield with a peep sight if memory serves. I enjoyed it very much while realizing that this guy worked his tail off all day long every day.

I have been watching it on and off as well. I watched the same fellow shoot the mountain goat while his wife was back at camp catching salmon with her spinning reel upside down. She had no idea how to get the hook out of the fish's mouth. It was very amusing.

It will NOT fire 357 cartridges. You can load 357 bullets in 35 Rem brass, but that is where it ends.

Thanks for the input guys. I will load some from 6.5 to 8.5 and see what I can get as far as groups. I will be using Starline virgin brass and regular Federal primers to start out with. The rifle groups very well with the Black Hills cowboy ammo, so I know it is a shooter.

Either of your choices would have been a good one. If you want the lowest bases I know of, try some Warne two piece bases and Weaver low rings. This is the lowest setup I have found for my Marlin leverguns.

I have owned Marauders in 30-30 and 35. They are neat little guns and very rare. I sold both during hard times and still regret it. Truth be told though, my 20" barreled Texan balances and carries better than the Marauders did anyway.

They made relatively slim foreends in the 1980s, but not as slim as the ones made in the 1960s. If it has a warning on the barrel, it is from the 80s or late 70s at the earliest.

I have an old Marlin 995 (same action as the model 60) that is a tack driver, but does jam when it gets dirty. As long as I keep it reasonably clean, it is all I could want in a squirrel gun. Light, fast and accurate.
