Re: A Whack of Photos of Some Older Winchesters
Someone has a definite talent for taking photos of old rifles. Some of the backdrops are very creative. The subject material is not bad either. I am envious.

Re: Marlin experts - first date for drilled/tapped receivers?
To further confuse matters, I have owned 336 rifles made as early as 1955 that were factory drilled and tapped for scope mounts.

Re: Marlin 336CB
The 336CB 38-55 is indeed a rare rifle and $700 is a good price for one in mint condition. The 336CB 30-30 is even harder to find. I have owned both and they are excellent pointing rifles. The 38-55 are notoriously variable in the actual bore size. I have heard of examples ranging from .376 to .379....

Wonderful job! I really like those 1894M rifles. I have owned two in my life and just missed on a chance at another one. They are neat rifles.

Re: savage model 99 in 358
Yours is definitely a 99F. If is has a tang safety it is valuable. It is has a lever safety it is extremely valuable especially if it is in great condition. You will have not trouble selling it if you decide you dont like it.

Re: savage model 99 in 358
18" at 100yds . That is not good. I have never heard of one being that inaccurate. Were your scope mounts loose etc? Which model do you have the, the straight gripped "Brush Gun" or the pistol gripped 99F?

Re: OT - One man's wilderness: An Alaskan odyssey
I remember watching it on PBS with my son a couple of years ago. I remember him shooting a nice dall ram with a spoterized 03 Springfield with a peep sight if memory serves. I enjoyed it very much while realizing that this guy worked his tail off all day long every day.

I used to tie my own for mountain trout, stuff like Adams parchutes, elk hair caddis, Thunderheads and bead head stuff for the tailwaters. I have not tied one in at least 10 years, but still have hundreds left from when I did. It is a lot of fun and satisfying, but does not work well with several pa...

Kirk, that is a nice rifle. Thanks for sharing. It is the exact same configuration as my 1892 38WCF except for the rear sight. I have come to really like the look of the round barrel vs the octagon. Mine was made in 1892 is a really good shooter. I finally got around to reloading for it this past we...

38-40 and Unique
Anyone here reload for the 38-40 using Unique? I have a quantity of the powder and lots of 180 grain lead bullets. These will be used in an 1892 Winny. I was thinking of starting with around 6.5 grains and going up to maybe 7.5 grains to see what the rifle likes the best. Let me know what results yo...

Well said Charles. I guess we Tennesseeans should be a little more proactive. I meant no offence to any Texans. I guess this dates back to my childhood when we had new neighbors move in from Corpus Christi. I came to blows more than once with the twin boys my age over Texas vs Tennessee issues.

Dirty Dan, I respect Texan's pride in their state. But to say that Texas is more loaded with history is simply taking an egocentric view of history. That is what gets on some other Southerners nerves about Texans. Again, I am not bad mouthing Texas, but it certainly does not have any richer history ...

It would be a tough call between my Savage 99F 300 Sav, Marlin 336RC 35 Rem or Winchester 1892 38-40. I guess if push came to shove I would pick the Savage 99F for its overall utility and light weight. I think Savage 99s are good looking rifles too. The 1950s 99F (Featherweight) models were as light...

I have found the Brush Guns and later 99A rifles to be of good quality (not quite as good as the premillions 99s though). If you plan to scope the rifle, you will have trouble with the tang safety. It sits in a very bad place to get to once a scope is mounted above it. They are still very fine hunti...

I was given one just like that by my great aunt back in the mid 1980s. It shot great until about 1990 when I broke the little gizmo that rotates the cylinder upon cocking the hammer. I have since had three gunsmiths tell me that they cannot get a replacement part for it. Consequently, mine has been ...

FS - Marlin 1895SS 45-70 Standard Model
Selling this one for a friend. It is a standard model 1895SS 45-70 w/22" barrel and 1/2 magazine. It was made in the early 1990s and seems to be either a transition model or has upgarded wood. It has Marlin factory checkered walnut stocks. I did not think Marlin used the checkered stocks until ...

I too like the post type front sights for most shooting applications, but I do favor the firesights or ivory bead front sight for my Marlin 1894 44 Mag. The bead is easier to see in low light in the woods and I just put the bead where I want the bullet to go. Since the rifle is really a 100yd rifle ...

Sounds like an early 1980s 336 to me if it has the warning, but no safety. I am not sure where they are getting the model 740 business. If it is in mint condition, that is a fair price. You might be able to get them down to $300 OTD. They are very nice rifles and you wont go wrong even for the askin...

Goat, lots of good info in the Savage Colletors forum at 24hourcampfire. There are several guys there that know LOTS about Savage 99s. I know a little. The tang safety models were not made until after 1960. In my opinion, the best made Savage 99s were made prior to 1960 and have the lever safety. Wi...
