I'm a fan, still using a couple old K4's. Then again, there aren't many options in that class since most of the optics companies only do LPVO's in that power range any more.

Re: 44 special with round balls
I did it with Hornady roundballs, think they were .433". I went with an unsized case half full of Pyrodex with the ball stuffed down inside to compress the powder. They seemed to be accurate enough at close range with little noise or recoil.

My best shooting SA is a 4 5/8" Blackhawk, and I beat up plenty of steel at 100-200 yards back in the pre-fuzzy front sight days with a variety of 4" S&W's. Probably has a lot to do with the short guns being more likely to be out and about with you since they're handier to begin with.

Thanks for the heads-up, looks like a worthwhile upgrade. My 550 is actually an old converted 450 and still has the plain crank pin with snap rings, if you don't keep that in mind it can twist in use and cause some issues.

The M1/M14 trigger has two sets of sear hooks, the second set catches the hammer as the action cycles, effectively functioning as the disconnector. When you release the trigger it drops the hammer back onto the primary sear, if the secondary is worn it fails to capture the hammer on rebound. General...
