Trapper Length Cartridge Performance
The recent discussions over 30-30 vs 38-55 brought a question to my mind. I know how the 30-30 performs in a trapper length barrell, but how do other calibers like the 38-55 or 45-70 perform in the shorter barrels?

+1 on what Bogie and Pokey said. Find the best pre 64 94 you can find, no matter which caliber. Then your quest begins for finding a nice pre 64 in the other caliber and then you will need a 92 in a pistol caliber, then you will have to get an 1886 in 45-70 for those really big hogs and then...........

Can anyone tell me when these were made or where I can get that information. I recently purchased one new in the box. It is very well made, with beautiful feather crotch figured walnut. You start small and a ways off and over time move in closer and work your way up in caliber. As you get real close it does not hurt to have them involved in some activity that has their feet moving while you shoot. They are learning while their feet are moving. If they get nervous you make no big de...

The reason for the restriction on the Stag is this. The stag drop their antlers in the same forest in India where the tigers live. The natives were starting fires to burn the brush thereby making it easier to find the sheds. This practice was destroying the habitat. As a result the Indian government...

I do not know about most, but I prefer mine in the Northeast and hanging pretty vertical. NOPE, you are all wrong. The 1886 was the big one and the 1892 was the small one. How could they market a mid-size with a model number that was 1894. We would never be able to figure it out and factory orders would always be getting messed up thinking that the mid-size should be the middle number mo...

The 50-110 is also missing and would be on my list, but my top would be the 45-70. The 1886 Winchester is, in my opinion, the finest lever action ever and the 45-70 is the most versatile caliber for it.

Kirk, Thanks for the info. My thoughts on the softer lead were not so much that they would not ricochet as much but more that they would tend to mushroom more and penetrate less. That way even on a pass through of smaller targets, like say a coyote there would be less remaining velocity and energy. ...
