Berger should know what twist you need to shoot his bullets. I have read that the 10 twist is borderline with 140's in the 6.5x55 and the 256 Newton. The 6.5-06 has a little more capacity and will drive them a little faster and stabilize them better. I guess if I was limited to a 6.5-06 or 6.5-284, ...

For $600 I would have been digging in my pocket! The 44 is the best of the bunch and the one that appeals to me the most. All three seemed to be solid mechanically except the dust covers are loose on both 73's and the lifter is a little sloppy in its bore on the 38. The barrels had a lot of dings an...

Value of 73's and 92's?

I heard a gun store had a couple 73's and they were going to be priced at $500-$600. I happened to be near the store and stopped in. They have a 44 rifle mfg. in 1916 with octagon barrel. The rifling is all there but it has the typical fine pitting. The metal is in good shape but the finish has gone...

Probably not going to be able to attend. Yesterday we learned that our friend has only a few weeks to live. He is coming to our house today to finish his time here. The alternative was to let him be sent to a nursing home that would probably be many miles from here. Here he will be with friends. May...

I don't think you can get in trouble with the load you found for the 173 grain. If 1625fps is in the velocity range you want then I would not hesitate to try it for the 170 grain. Not enough difference there to matter. 28.4 grains fills the case enough to be in my comfort range. The Sierra 27 grain ...

760 is an excellent powder for heavy(200 grains and up) cast bullets in the 30-30 if you want maximum velocity at levergun pressures. It will give all that little case has in that application and with good accuracy in my 30-30. I have never tried reduced loads with it for all the reasons listed above.

A 90's vintage 94 has a forged steel receiver that takes bluing just fine. The cast receiver that won't blue well ended when the AE came out. I don't know what blue will match the old blue though.

The VZ-33 is the same action as the G33-40 and is in demand for custom rifles. It is a small ring model 98 and is probably worth close to what you paid for the whole lot. There is a G33-40 listed on Accurate Reloading for $900.

I have but I didn't get very good accuracy with it either. There may have been other reasons it didn't shoot well but it was good enough for plinking anyway. Your .309" bullet may not be big enough. I have had better luck with .310" or .311" bullets. It is more important to fit the th...

Wisner lists two carriers: part# 1294 which is the pre-64 and part# 1294X which is the post-64. He also sells the short pre-64 screws part#1394. The 1294X would be the way to go. It is well worth the price to avoid all the grinding and fitting. I bought a tap for the right side of the receiver so I ...

Part II

This is a more detailed explanation that I posted elsewhere: I bought a pre-64 carrier to modify because it is a stronger forging whereas the post 64 carrier is cast. My 356 would cycle a COL of 2.57" which is the length I use for the RCBS 35-200-FN. My two heavyweight loads measure 2.69" ...

Lengthening COL in the Winchester 94

I have given a bit of thought to modifying the Winchester 94 to cycle longer cartridges. My 356 will feed a COL of 2.57" which is what I loaded the RCBS 35-200-FN to. My two new 35 caliber molds both make heavier and longer bullets. Pictured are my dummy rounds with the RCBS-200, the Saeco 352 ...

Sling for a 94

I want to put a sling on my 356 Win for hunting season. I haven't killed anything with it yet and need to rectify that situation. Both it and my 30-30 had the Uncle Mikes clamp on sling stud on the magazine tube. The 30-30 tube was loose as a goose and the 356 tube had been pulled forward past the s...
