Re: Minibikes, Ya'll Have One Growing Up?

My dad and I built my first mini bike.
He made the frame from electrical conduit.
It was light but weak.
I really had a great time with that thing.

I next bought a Honda 50 motorcycle.
Had a great time getting into trouble with that baby.

Re: Stock refinishing/dying questions.

Has anyone used Linseed oil and rit dye(liquid) to stain/dye a stock? I don't know if it will mix well. Maybe powder and linseed oil would be better? How does the linseed oil take to the wood? Messy? I've thought about boiling some water or at least very hot and submerging the stock in the hot dye ...

My records don't show that serial number prefix.
But with that inscription and no scroll engraving around it, it is most likely the Special Edition Legacy Tribute.

Is it the 1 of 222 or the one of 9422 Tribute? The serial number will either begin with FTC or FTH. The FTC model had a total production of 222. Pretty rare gun for sure. Production of the FTH never reached 9422. I don't think there is a correct total production number available. I think all of thes...

Congrats on your purchase.

I think they moved away from the "stamped" parts and back toward machined parts in 1971.

So the post 64 guns are not as bad as has been advertized.

They still shoot great.

I have never used aquafortis stain but I have read that it is used on highly figured wood. I guess it really makes the grain "pop". This stock didn't have much grain. Though it is maple, has hard and soft spots in the grain, I sealed it first to prevent blotching. Then used a surface stain...

Hey Jack, How many coats of oil did you put on? Your wood must be walnut. Walnut has an open grain. The birch, I found under the color in my stock, doesn't have open pores. Got around to bleaching the stains out of my stock today.
Took about 20 minutes.
A little Clorox goes a long way.

Re: Another Stock Refinish Thread

That type of finish is about 100 years old and goes right on the wood.

It is pretty but it would be the least durable finish that could be used.
Wax is way to soft for me to use on anything I use outdoors.
I hand made Chippendale table or a finely crafted Maloff rocker but not a gun butt.

I think I am going the spray on a satin finish.
An oil finish isn't very durable and you are right the color may smear.

Maybe a satin poly
Shouldn't look like plastic if a satin is used
And should last for years.

Jack,

In that link the author is demonstrating how to stain maple to look like walnut.
You would never use a penetrating stain either oil or alcohol based on maple.
Maple absorbs stain very unevenly without pre-stain sealing (conditioning) or using a gel stain.

Gel stain is the only stain that I know of that you can actually control how much color you add. But you have to have the shade correct as peter44ru has pointed out.
