Re: 243 Winchester for deer ?

The 243 has not been a real popular caliber in the north woods. It is used by some, mostly shooters that because of small size or youth find that they shoot it well because of it's mild recoil. That I think is good thinking, accurate shooting is the first priority. I see the 243 as the 30-30 of the ...

Check out Skinner sights. There are a couple different versions. One that would require no drilling is mounted in the buckhorn dovetail. That might help you focus enough without doing anything to the rifle you can't undo. Good luck.

Winchester 94 Legacy in 30-30. I know it's not anything overly special, but I shot it well and it was accurate. I liked it's long sleek profile too. I'd like to be able to try it with the LE ammo. Oh well, sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes it eats you.

In my part of the world, Maine, if I were to try and hide out up in the Allagash let's say, I'd take my Marlin 336 30-30 and Ruger Single Six 22 LR. This would be a place where you'd be on foot or could use a canoe in some spots, so a lot of firearms just wouldn't work well. If I was setting up a ca...

I've had both versions. The porting on the Marlins doesn't seem to increase the muzzle blast for the shooter much. You won't be disapointed in getting it ,especially at that price.

A couple years ago I saw a handi-rifle at a custom rifle makers shop that was being "deluxed". Custom walnut stock and forearm, all the pin and screw heads flated out, deep blued receiver. The owner had three different barrels fitted to it which were all reblued. I don't recall the chamber...

Of the models and makes I've had the Marlin 336,1895 and 444 have never had any problems in functioning. Same for the Savage 99. I had one Winchester 94 in 7-30 waters that needed to be double clutched a lot to cycle. I liked how the cartridge performed but not in that rifle. My Marlin 1894 in 44 ma...

The term is used to discribe any rifle that shoots a more powerful cartridge, real or percieved than whatever your currently using. The term is usually used to justify to your wife why you need a new rifle. As in, "I missed that deer because I didn't have a powerful enough rifle". The trick...

That is a great deal on a rifle. The comment was made that you don't hear much from the gun magazines about the 7mm-08, but everyone that has one likes it a lot. The 30-30 as would be expected. And while there are many that are not, I think of straight walled, rimmed cases with flat and round nosed bullets. How old or new is less of an issue to me. The likes of the 444 Marlin and 44 mag to me are "classic" style rounds, and close kin to the 45-70 a...

I have a Marlin 1894 in 44 mag. I've had it since 1979, so I have it figured out fairly well. It is a good choice for short range deer work. Compact and light, just over 6 lbs. I think the new ones run about 6 1/2 lbs. I have found the 44 mag to work very well at 150 yds. and under on deer. The Winc...

If she likes lever rifles, a Winchester or Marlin in 30-30 would be a good choice. The Win. are a little lighter, but Marlins can be bought new and have a good service department. A lot has to do with what you already have for rifles and what you hunt and where. Many talk of "what if's". For example, I live in northern New England, don't travel to far away places to hunt. I like the north woods so if I did travel it would be to other places like this. So a rifle/car...
