Re: WInchester 1886 33WCF to 45-70

I have to interject my opinion here--for what it is worth. I have an '86 in .33 takedown. The bore is mint and the rest of the rifle is about NRA 85%. It is very accurate. I, also, got a bunch of Hornady 200 grain bullets before they quit making them. For the record, .33 brass can be had through Mid...

Re: Winchester 1886 advice?

FWIW: At the Kalispell, Montana Gun Show yesterday, I saw a really nice '86 that had been refinished and restocked in .33WCF for $2500.00. There were several there that were in the 7-8000 price range also but, afterall, this is sort of '86 country these were all 40-82' by the way. I got three of the...

Hobie:
I have used the "Tink" method for alot of years. I did, once, make a "Drop Tube" for a Sharps rifle that I had but went back to my old method. The drop method, as far as I was concerned, was, too cumbersome.

Hobie:
I have used that drop tube and much prefer to just take a wodden dowel and "tink" the side of the case. It does the job faster and with the same results.

Re: 1876 Repros

Hobie: Not much to tell, really. When I got it--now that is a story all in itself. I had origianlly order a Chappy but when it came it was all busted to pieces--sent it back--they sent another and that was a mess also and besides the chamber looked like it had been drilled with a brace and bit. Sent...

Re: Black Powder Revolver Lube

For what its worth, the only lube that I use and have used for over 50 years is a mix of 50/50 beeswax and waterpump grease but that grease is sorta getting hard to come by these days. I use it for bullet lube, to fill the bases of Minie balls, and over the chambers of BP pistols with NO adverse eff...

Re: 1876 Repros

Hobie: Speaking for myself, I cast all my own and make my own alloys. As you know, my rifle is in 45-75 caliber. After my "modifications", my rifle is just the way that I like it. Hunting? Yep! and also alot of paper punching. Had one of my relatives-who is a certifiable "Gun Nut"...

Re: .33 WCF / .338 Reloading Question.

I happen to have a .33 Takedown that I got back several years ago. I give $1600 for it. It was made in 1910 and had belonged to an old Game Warden in Anaconda, MT. I am the second owner of the rifle. I still have a goodly supply of the Hornady bullets but do use the Rapine bullet and the RCBS-GC bul...

Re: 1876 Repros

Hobie: I, too, have a Uberti 45-75 and really like it but had to do alot of "reconditioning" on it such as the trigger pull which started out at 12 pounds and now is at 5.5 pounds. I took off that yucky "plastic-like" finish and it now has a hand-rubbed linseed oil finish. The re...

Re: What is the most unusual cartridge you shoot?

Mine are the .33, the .40-82--both fine cartridges for deer and elk and my 375 H&H with the 38-55 lead bullet over 22 grains of 4198. Had it go through one deer at 75 yards and not even mushroom.

I have an FCD in .33 and one in .40-82 and they both work fine. The Lee folks were very good to work with on my orders.

Re: What is your favorite Cartridge - lever gun

I have three 40-82 rifles and love them all. I have killed more game tho with my old 45-90 Model '86. I guess that would be my mostest favorite rifle but right now am sort of falling in love with a M-'76 in 45-75 caliber.

Re: Marlin Is Polling For A New Levergun Chambering Preference

YOu folks are missing the bcoat on this. The 40-65 is what they should come out with as it is commeercially available and is very popular in the silouete games. Besides all Marlin would have to do to the 1895 is put another barrel on the action and it would sell great!

Re: 45-90 W.C.F. Loads

71: I use 58.0 grains of 3031 under a 300 grain jacked flatnose bullet in my 45-90. I use this same powder and charge in my 45-70 and my 40-82. I have used this load in my rifle for the past 40+ years and it has successfully killed quite a number of game with no problems except for the animal of cou...

Re: Barnes Bullets.

I just got done reading all this stuff about Barnes bullets and now it is my turn. I have shot deer at some rather long ranges with Barnes bullets in my 45-90 with no problems and got a bunch of special order bullets for my 40-82 rifles from them. The only pleasure that I got with those bullets (260...

Re: Hawk Bullets

I still have several boxes of the Hornady bullets but to save them I use both the Rapine and the RCBS gas check molds and have never had any problems with them as I cast hard. My .33 is a takedown that was made in 1908 and is still in about 85-90% condition and the bore is almost mint so that helps ...

Re: 33 WCF questions

I suppose that I should put in my 2 bits here on the .33 questions and answers . I own a 33 also. It is a takedown. The original owner was an old Game Warden out of Ananconda, Montana and I am the 2nd owner. I found that 36 grains of 3031--in my rifle--works very well with a MV of 1920fps. but the b...

I have to say something here about the '76. Mine is aUberti. I did not like the finish on it so redid it my self. The rear sight was not what I wanted so put on a Winchester rear ladder type sight and a Marbles tang sight. Redid the trigger assembly so that it now breaks at 5 pounds. I now like my r...

I can't help mentioning, after reading all of your comments, that I, also, load for the 40-82. In fact, I have three of them. One is a Rolly block, one an '86 and one a custom '71. When I started out on my project, there was nothing available so I done did my own research. I used my Rolly Block for ...

Sorry about that. It actually was copied from the Handloader Issue No. 65 dated 01/02/1977. I was looking at another copy of another issue that dealt with the .33 when I stated that. The author of the Handloader article was a Jim Hanson. There are also loads for the .33 listed in the Third Edition o...

Fungus Sam: Thought that I might pass this on to you as you say you are having trouble with accuracy in your .33. The load that I use for hunting, I got from a 1936 reloading handbook. It calls for 4831(old Style) at 53 grains under that Hornady 200 grain soft point. I got 0.221" group at 25 ya...

I have a .33 Takedown and really like it. A few years ago, when that ammo was still rather cheap, I got a bunch but since then have used 45-70 brass. I have made a lot of .33 brass out of that 45-70 stuff without any failures. Remington brass holds up better than Winchester so keep that in mind. I g...

I ran across a Gun Collector, in Townsend, Montana, several years ago that claimed that he had a Model 71 that was in 33 caliber and claimed that he had a factory letter to prove it. It was, indeed, a special order from Winchester. At the very first, Winchester was still making 33's for both the '86...
