During my dove shooting heydays over 20 years ago I owned several shotguns including a few pump guns including a Browning BPS, Remington 870, SKB 7300, Mossberg 500, Winchester 1300 XTR Featherweight. Of them all I hung onto the model 1300 XTR as it was the most reliable, and smoothest of the bunch ...

How about a 22 Hornet bolt gun? At least the cartridge looks like it belongs in a levergun, and is reloadable. Pretty decent selection too.

I'm very partial to the Garand design, and also to wood stocks so my vote goes to the Minis. Wish I didn't sell mine at a time of financial destitution. Wish someone commercialized a .223 necked up to .243 though I've popped a couple piggies with 70 grain handloads which dropped them like a rock.

I don't think I'd have any problem with the Henry's loading system via magazine tube. For a hunting gun 6 rounds at a time more than adequate.

I was always under the impression that it wasn't the metallurgy that made the '73 week, it was the design, and no modern alloy could change that. Maybe the innards are a whole new design. I like the idea if it works.

I guess I have never considered 6 rounds as too few, and if I'm really concerned about bears I pack my Taurus model 44 mag with 6.5 ported barrel. If I'm REALLY concerned with BIG bears then I'll pack my short barreled 12 gauge pumpgun (Win 1300) stoked with 1-3/8 oz. Brenekke slugs. Just my 2 cents...

Always a fan of the wheel gun. I reload so want to have my brass easily recoverable. Bears are usually loners and don't attack in groups so I figure I'd rarely need even 6 rounds to deal with a bear situation. Hard to beat the reliability of a wheel gun, rarely a jam, and much quicker dealing with a...
