Re: Red dot on a lever?

Here are pics of my USRAC/Moruku 1886EL with a Burris FastFire II on a Turnbull mount. I really like the rig. It's handy, quick on target and weighs much less than most of the "full sized" '86s ... 7#12oz. I intend to use it as a moose rifle ... good for out to 200 yards. I also carry it i...

Re: OT - How Do I keep the Moose out Of The Yard??

I have had a dog yard of 30 - 70 dogs for over 30 years. And the moose around here are used to sled dogs on chains ... they know they're no threat. But, sled dogs in a team, they don't like. I've had more than a few moose go through my team on their way to leaving, trying to stomp the dogs, and only...

Re: Jack O'Connor

I've often wondered what Jack would hunt with, were he in his prime today. Blued or stainless, walnut or composite? Would the "high tech" rifles of today hold his attention? I believe Jack was an eminently straight forward, practical man. The rifles he chose were the very best of their era...

Re: Jack O'Connor

In the '50s and '60s, as a youth, I subscribed to Outdoor Life just so I could read the latest O'Connor articles. He was a professor of English, at the U. of Idaho, I believe, and he was an excellent writer. No pointy headed, ivory tower academic. He had a pasion for sheep hunting, and by all accoun...

Re: .45-70 Ammo for the Iditarod?

AJMD429 .... There are no pictures. It was in the middle of a -40 night when I arrived on the scene ... a bit after Dewey had shot the moose. The race rules were that no team could advance past a game animal that had been killed before it was gutted (so the meat could be salvaged by race officials) ...

Re: Gunsmiths to remove tang safety and rebounding hammer

kaschi .... Like you, several years ago I called Turnbull Rest. and asked them if they would "restore" my UISRAC/Miroku 86 EL, and was told that their lawyers ruled against it. Last spring I asked a "well connected" acquaintance who he would suggest to convert it. Doug Turnbull w...

Re: .45-70 Ammo for the Iditarod?

hfcable ... My S&W 329 is my April thru October sidearm. Loaded with Buffalo Bore's "reduced recoil" .44 mag load - 255gr GC hards-cast @ 1270 fps in my barrel - it's a good load for the 329. I had it Magnaported in order to virtually eliminate the muzzle jump. I can now get off a 2nd ...

Re: Gunsmiths to remove tang safety and rebounding hammer

I sent my USRAC/ Miroku 1886 EL to Doug Turnbull to be restored to John Browning's design. They did a stellar job. And the formerly despised tang-safety/ rebounding hammer and terrible trigger pull were gone, and now she's got half-cock. ( I also replaced the Williams FoolProof with a Burris FastFir...

Re: .45-70 Ammo for the Iditarod?

Cruise, and all ... I was on that '85 Iditarod. I was traveling about 30 minutes behind Susan when she had her moose incident. The hero of the tale is Duane "Dewey" Halverson. Susan didn't carry a firearm to defend her dogs ... too much weight. Dewey, though, did ... a Charter Arms Bulldog...
