Re: Hey Fellas - looking for comments on .33 WCF

I,too, have a .33WCF. I have not used Bertram brass in it as I wouldn't walk across the street to get some as I had some case failures with some of their 45-75 cases that split at the shoulder also just as you said. I use them for "Show and Tell" for folks not to use them and besides that ...

Re: MUZZLE LOADING SHOTGUN

Well fellows--I built my own muzzle loading shotgun back in the 70's. It is a double barrel 10gauge. I used a set of barrels from an old cartridge gun and the locks were also from a cartridge gun. I machined the hook breeches for the barrels and made the locks so that they had a half cock rather tha...

Re: Chaparral 76 range report and new outfit

For what it is worth---A relative of mine has an original 45-60 Model 76 and did not have any dies for it. I had an old set of Herters 45-70 dies that I put in the lathe and turned down the length of the dies till they made his 45-60 cases out of 45-70 cases. They work just fine and he has not lost ...

Re: 40-82 loading data

One more thought in passing. Be sure to slug that barrel. 40-82 barrels seem to have a very wide variance in bore diameters---anywhere from 0.403 out to 0.409. when you get the right measurements and get the right bullet you will get the best results. Also, if you have access to the Greenhill formul...

Re: 40-82 loading data

Using 4198 for a starter is good. The most accurate charge that I came up with using that 260 grain paper-patched bullet was 23.0 grains of 4198 and a tuft of kapok on the powder. It chronographed at 1322fps and was still 1160fps at 100 yards. the SD was 34 fps. the next most accurate was 28.0 grain...

Re: 40-82 loading data

I don't usually tell folks what to do but in this case I think that I will. I have 3 40-82 rifles and love them all. Back in the mid 80's I was working up loading data for them and the rifle that I used for all my testing was a single shot rolling block custom that I had made. When I got done with m...

Re: Took the 128 year old 1873 out for a shoot...Ugh!

I can't help my self but to interject a comment or two here about your "sewer-pipe" barrel. I have a Model 92 Winchester in 32-20 caliber. It, too, has a sewer pipe for a bore. I thought about having it relined as you are thinking of doing so I asked an old gunsmith friend of mine about my...

Re: Alliant 2400 in a 1876 Replica Rifle ?

I do not have a 45-60 but rather a 45-75. My rifle is an early model and has the larger chamber. I went to Ken Waters book and in it he listed 22.0 grains of 2400 as an acceptable load for both the 45-60 and the 45-75 with their respective bullet weights of 300 and 350 grains. I tested loads in my r...

Re: So What do you do with an 1886 Winchester in 40-82 Caliber?

Just read the last post. Thought that maybe I left something out so here for what it is worth: In my son's rifle cartridges, I use a tuft of kapok out of an old life preserver vest. In that new one it is not needed. When I did all my testing of over 25 different powders, I built me a test platform t...

Re: So What do you do with an 1886 Winchester in 40-82 Caliber?

I must intercede here on this 40-82. I have three of them and love them all. I also have--and use an original mold. You must slug the barrel to find out what the bore actually is. I have two that are 0.403 and one (original) that is 0.4085. I use RCBS dies that include the Trim die. My 0ldest boy ha...

Cimarron: I used to have a Sharps Business Rifle. Now my cousin has it. It is a 45-90. I have two Ballard nose pour molds. One for that Sharps and one for my Rolling Block 40-82. I like paper patched bullets but it takes alot of spit to cut and wrap but it is worth it. My oldest boy uses paper patch...

Re: Uberti M1876 45-75

Cimarron: Appreciate the return answer from you. Where did I come up with that 76 grain load? On one of the comments on the CAS site, someone had taken an original cartridge and dumped the powder and weighed it. There was 76 grains instead of listed 75 grains. So I told myself why not give it a try....

Re: On Topic!! tell me about the 33 WCF

For what it is worth. I only run my cases through an RCBS Trim and File die first. Very lightly lubed and file off what sticks out the top. Then I run them through my FL die and I am done. I don't feel that there is a need for expensive forming dies if done this way and it works for me. I haven't lo...

Re: Uberti M1876 45-75

Cimarron: I, too, have a 45-75. It is an earlier version with the larger chamber. I like the advantage of the extra 5 grains of case capacity. All my cases are fire-formed albeit Jamison, 348 Bertram or 50AK. No problems for me at any rate. One of my favorite loads is 76 grains of Swiss½ under a Hoc...

Re: On Topic!! tell me about the 33 WCF

I guess I must enter into this discussion about this rifle/caliber. I have a .33 that is a takedown and was made in 1910. I am the second owner of this rifle which came from an old Game Warden from over at Anaconda. I played with several (lots) of different powders and charges and with the Hornady b...

Re: 1886 light rifle, what do ya'll about the price?

That is way too darn high! If it had all the dies and about 20 boxes of factory ammo then maybe. I got a M-86 in .33 back about 5 or so years ago and give 1500 for it. It is a Takedown. I got all the dies and some ammo with it. I know that my time span probably would raise the price on mine but stil...

I, also, have the 40-82. Three in fact. One is a custom Remington Rolling block that I used to test all my loads with, a completely restored M-86 and a custom Model 71 that was rebarreled to this caliber. All shoot very well. My oldest boy, who lives in Anchorage, has one that I had restored for him...

Hobie: I figured that I would pass on all the different powders that I have played with in my rifle. No loading data just what I used. They are H4831, IMR4831, 3031, 2400, Fg, FFg, Swiss 1½, 5744, 4759, Pyrodex CTG, Trail Boss and 4198. Very disapointed in the two 4831 powders as there are way too m...

Re: How Many here currently own/shoot a .45-75 WCF?

Hobie: I am still shooting my 45-75. As you may know, my rifle has the earlier larger chamber and it suits me just fine. I have found that the fire-formed cases hold 76 grains of Swiss 1½ just fine and I am using a Hoch custom bullet that weighs in at 350 grains using the 16:1 alloy that the old tim...
