I only own 2 centrefires, a 223 wby vanguard and a Rossi 92 in 44 mag which does the most work. For subsonics I run 200gn gold dots, they are about the the lowest velocity expanding bullet around, down to 800's fps impact. I did this with some 44-40 dies. The reason I did these was to keep the base of the bullet snug with the neck. If the base is set below the neck, then there is only the front driving band and the crimp holding the bullet in, keeping it straight.....makes for some inaccurate loads. 25396259_836718776...

The most popular for black powder loads is Accurate Mold's 43-215C. It is a direct replica of Ideal/Lyman's 42798/43098. However, John added a large lube groove and a roll crimp groove. Both the 38-40 and 44-40 get poor reviews because most have no idea as to the history and why the ballistic change over several generations. Stop treating and loading both like a pistol cartridge if you want performance in rifles, of which they were designed.

Just to be clear, most 44-40 loads today, including factory hunting loads by Winchester, are neutered down to 44 Henry ballistics. Most 44-40 "acceptable" handloads are also below 44 Henry ballistics.
