Re: Winchester 94 in 25-35 ??
Mine shot pretty well using the open sights and I went ahead and put a Weaver V-3 on it. The front sight is pretty tall as issued and I doubt you could get a Sourdough any taller. I’ll look at Brownells today and see. I put a pretty tall Sourdough on my .32 Magnum Marlin as the XS rear sight stands ...

Re: Winchester 94 in 25-35 ??
With the 100-grain bullets I stopped at 26.0 grains. I don’t remember where Dr. A stopped.
Believe it or not it is very hard to beat IMR 4320 in the .25-35 and in the .25-35AI.
Have you tried any 100-grain bullets in your rifle?

Re: Winchester 94 in 25-35 ??
I don’t know the age of your rifle but in my Model 94AE I push the 100-grain Speer JHP to 2,630 fps using Alliant Reloder 10X. Both Reloder 10X and Reloder 15 will push the 117-grain Hornady above 2,350 fps. Dr. A started this thread a few years ago. We had a lot of dun comparing notes. http://shoot...

Re: 25-35 Winchester Question.
Hobie, Looking at my notes there were a number of short range loads available for the .25-35 using 87-grain JHP, JSP and LDRN bullets. Most all of the cases had deep cannelures rolled into the case neck at less than half length to keep the short bullets from setting back in the case neck. I believe ...

Re: 25-35 Winchester Question.
Hobby, the .25-35 sure does change point of impact with bullet weight change. The 1940 Shooters Bible lists several different loads for the .25-35. Western had a 117-grain full metal jacketed load and a flat nose boat tail bullet. Western had an Open Point Expanding (hollow point) boat tail bullet. ...

Re: 25-35 Winchester Question.
There were a number of specialty loads for the .25-35 WCF, .25-36 Marlin and the .25 Remington. I have several in my cartridge collection which include light bullets, full metal jacket and spitzer bullets. There were hollow points and “pneumatic” bullets. Goatguy,
Yuor mount sound like my Burris forward scope mount. I put it on my Trapper just to try out and liked it so well I have never removed it.
The 10th post down in this thread has a picture of the Burris mount.

Point well taken. I have posted something similar to this before but it fits here. P. O. Ackley and others of his time sold high performance. There are two excellent articles from American Rifleman magazines which explain their goals. The first article: December 1953 issue. The H. P. White Laborator...

Personally I have no problem with the modern Model 94 and higher pressures. I believe Mr. Nonneman when he says the Winchesters show uneven or non uniform heat treatment in his tests. In my shooting with the .30-30AI I am certain I have been above 50,000 CUP regularly without difficulty. If we treat...

Re: Question about reaming a chamber 30-30 to 30-30 AI...
Chris Cash may have his posts. I don’t know how the older guns stack up but I think I have the information. I’ll look for it. I would not convert a rifle I already had in .38-55. Too much fun to be had with the .375 and .38-55 rifles. The 1964 rifle would probably do well but I realy think I would s...

Re: Question about reaming a chamber 30-30 to 30-30 AI...
I don’t know any more. In my opinion the .308 Marlin Express changes everything. If I were going to ream a rifle today I would probably ream it to .308 Marlin Express as the cartridge case is easier to work with than the .30-30AI case. Seattle Reloader has two Marlin 336 rifles converted to .307 Win...

Yes, a good chamffer and the Lee belling die helps quite a bit. I mentioned this to Dave Scovill once in a letter and he commented on my use of the Lyman M die by saying if I would look carefully at my chronograph readings I would find the use of the M die would give me higher veolicty spreads. I te...

Re: Question about reaming a chamber 30-30 to 30-30 AI...
Don has it right. Don’t use Imperial Wax on the inside of your case necks. I use both the Lyman M-die and the Lee case neck expander die on the .30-30AI. The shoulder is easy to set back slightly and bulge the case just below the shoulder. This is hard to see when looking at your loaded ammunition. ...

Re: Question about reaming a chamber 30-30 to 30-30 AI...
With the 20” barrel .30-30AI my velocity goals were 3,000 fps with the 100/110 grain bullets, 2,700 fps with the 125/130 grain bullets, 2,500 fps with the 150 grain bullets and 2,300 fps with the 170 grain bullets. Re: Question about reaming a chamber 30-30 to 30-30 AI...
Varget is the most accurate powder I have tried in the .30-30AI. Reloder 15 gives the highest velocity with almost as good accuracy. The Speer 170-grain bullet is my favorite for the .30-30AI and the .307 Winchester. The Speer 130-grain flat nose and the 150-grain Barnes X have given me the best acc...

I sure like Hodgdon 4895 and H335 in the .30-30AI. Both powders meet my velocity goals and provide good accuracy. I’ve said before you could start and stop your powder search with 4895.
Have you found H4895 and H335 to be interchangeable grain for grain with your 150- and 170-grain loads?

I left my barrel in place when I reamed my Marlin. The extension hood on the barrel will take some light cuts from the reamer as it begins to push the shoulder forward. Even going slowly and frequently cleaning the reamer it takes longer to disassemble the rifle than cut the chamber. Here is a link ...

The .256 didn’t have a chance when it came out as most varmint hunters want to shoot long distance. There are few small game hunters because there are few places left to hunt small game. A fine rifle and cartridge at an excellent price. Here are links to two rambling threads which have some .308 Marlin Express data for you to ponder. The .307 Winchester (my favorite) is dead and gone. The .308ME is easier to work with than the .30-30AI (a very fine cartridge in its own right). If yo...

There is a thread on the Beartooth forum comparing the 16- 20- and 26-inch .30-30’s. Alliant Reloder 15 and Hodgdon Varget will surprise you with their performance but 2,350 fps from a 20 inch barrel is not a reasonable goal. As a side note the .307 Winchester will exceed 2,450 fps with the 170-gr...

You checked the way I did. It is possible our dies reduce the case neck to a slightly different dimension or our .30-30 cases were a little different thickness – I used Remington cases and both RCBS and Lee dies.
