Re: Marlin age?
My dad was an "old" guy of 22 in 1968 in Vietnam. He re-retired (they called him back in) in '91 during the Gulf War. In tech school me and the other "old" guy (31, I was 28) were remembering watching Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi in theater. The youngest kid on the ...

As for being a "young pup"....... on my 30th birthday I was rolling around the perimeter at Al Udeid AB in Qatar, miles out from anywhere. The driver was vintage 1989, the Humvee was vintage 1987. As I said, "'89? I remember watching the wall come down live on TV". Driver, my mac...

Re: Price Check - Winchester .218 Bee
Update: Decided to skip the going round in circles, contacted Mr. Jensen at Winchester and sent it to him. Turns out the gun started life in 1926 as a .25-20, and sometime in the mid-30s was rebarreled/refinished (explaining the pristine general finish). I thought the gun was somewhat lacking in mar...

Re: Recoil Pad for my lever guns
The SKS was made for RUSSIANS (Simonov Semiautomatic Carbine)......and the short stock is made because Russia has winters.......real ones. Heavy clothing (and now body armor) with a long stock really sucks, as any M16A2 shooter can attest. A long armed person can shoot a short stock, the other way a...

Re: 1894 "Marlin Jam"
I have a pre-safety 1894 in .44 Mag, and I've had two problems with it. One was self inflicted, I was not paying attention and fed my .44 some .45 ACPs (got a couple rounds in before looking down and realizing what I did, thankfully before attempting to fire). The other, same day, was the loading ga...

Yup. Told G-in-L you guys were, other than Winchester the ones who would really know. Not being a Winchester guy, I didn't know if they came with the ring or not (having seen them with and without the actual ring). I do have some pics as part of his general collection but I don't have specific close...

Re: Price Check - Winchester .218 Bee
Ok.... Update, saw it again though I did not have a camera. Gun is definitely 50+ years old as grandmother-in-law was the original recipient approximately that long ago and it was NIB at the time, she never shot it. Barrel is marked .218 Bee, tang is marked Winchester, etc. Serial number is 963267. ...

Re: Win 94AE 44 Mag sights?
I use XS Sights on my Marlin .44 and the white stripe is easily picked up at night.
That said I've had a fiberoptic front sight on a 12ga set up for antipersonnel use and in some dark places...... it plain glows with nothing more than a night light, or starlight. Far better than a plain bead.

Re: New purchase not a lever but it is a 30/30
I ran into an older bolt action .30-30 at a shop in Texas once. Definitely made me do a double-take looking at the marking on the barrel. Not sure who made it.

Re: the movie "australia"
Every Australian I know cringes at the mention of that movie...... The 1895 was made in everything from .30-06, to .30-40, .303, .405, and even 7.62X54mm Russian (something like 20,000 were ordered for the Imperial Russian Army, though not all of them actually made it there). Interesting design, wis...

Re: What gun is that in this cowboy's holster?
Just because he's got ammo in his belt, doesn't mean it's for the pistol. A Tranter or Adams, maybe one of the odder Webley models (most had birds head grips, but you never know) is possible. Custer had a pair of Webley RICs. Several of the Belgian revolvers made that are similar to the French ones ...

Re: What gun is that in this cowboy's holster?
My initial impression was Broomhandle Mauser, but the shape of the triggerguard and the hammer makes me think it's not. Either a Colt Thunderer, or maybe a Brit wheelgun (the Belgians and French also made a couple revolvers that look like that). Hard to say off just that picture, but going by the sh...

Been driving all over Italy for the last 3 years. Pandas will go basically anywhere. 4X4 Pandas, while not Jeeps, will handle quite a few offroad adventures. They're not Land Rovers, but they're not intended to be.... more along the lines of a Subaru wagon. I've seen them get into some interesting p...

Grandfather-in-law had never seriously looked at it (he quite hunting and shooting around 30 years ago after a little confrontation with some bad guys and his M1 carbine), he had been under the impression it was a .22 simply by bore size (his eyesight is gone bad enough he can't read the barrel mark...

Re: Price Check - Winchester .218 Bee
My wife talked to the Winchester historian, apparently HE said it was a 92 by the serial number (I thought it was a 94, not being a Winchester guy). The gun's never been rebarreled, it's been in their possesion since it was bought and basically was stuck in a closet for fifty years. He also said if ...

Price Check - Winchester .218 Bee
In the case things get bad enough he needs to sell it.... Grandfather-in-law has a 98%, never fired (action has been cycled, but appears to never have been loaded, no scratches on the ramp) Winchester 92 in .218 Bee. Dates from the early 50s. Has a couple minor wear spots and a spot or two of rust. ...

Re: My first "High-Powered" rifle
Lee-Enfield No.4 Mk1, bought myself in 1998 for $220. Still in factory condition though it had obviously seen extensive service, made, as far as I can tell around 1943ish. Shot the hell out of it, still have it. It was a friend of mine's first rifle (ever) to shoot, he was going into the Army and I ...

I've generally shot cylinder or IC, modified does okay too.
Plated and buffered loads tend to get good tight patterns regardless of the choke.

I knew a guy (now deceased) who packed a 4" 629 on occasion....takes dedication. I would suggest you look into Cabo holsters (Carry a Big One), they primarily make IWB/OWB rigs for large wheelguns. Not sure if they're still in business, they were a couple years ago. If anyone can make a .44 dis...

Re: .22 Shorts -- i guess i'll take 'em
Circa 2005 (I was working in a gunshop at the time) new production CCI .22 Shorts and Longs were still available. CB Caps as well. I never had much use for .22 shorts for practice, though for pest control i can see they would be handy. I had a friend shooting her first rifle (she had grown up, but s...

Well the last time I went "hunting" i had a fireteam and a M240 with a belt......... This is the first time I'd ever actually been hunting against four legged animals as opposed to the two legged kind. The CCI had been performing fine (25 rounds fired uneventfully from a 50 round box) prev...

Yeah, mine fed 15 rounds zeroing without a hiccup so i figured, no problem, and I know I've shot thousands of Blazer in 9mm, .45 etc at paper. Never hunted anything that wasn't already trying to hunt me back with weapons involved, so ammo performance was something I wondered about when it came to an...

Leverguns, hunting, and a first timer
I rarely post here, so you probably don't know me. Last Sunday, after 31 years of not hunting, i finally went. (Wild pigs in Texas). In the time we had, we didn't get anything, though we heard a bunch about 30 yards out across a creek (no clear shot). I had a Marlin 1894, pre-lawyerbutton in .44 Mag...
