A buddy has a 15" Encore barrel that is kinda comfortable to shoot with the rubber grips. Factory 405gr and 300gr HP's aren't bad at all to shoot.

Thanks guys! Everyone around here has been pretty down, it's pretty hard when all the media shoves a darn camera in your face when they see you wearing stripes and just stopping to get gas to go to work or home. I still have mine that my dad gave me that I used to take my first deer in 1994. I doesn't like anything but 240gr bullets either. It is a great woods and timber gun that packs plenty of firepower in a very light, compact, and maneuverable package. It seems to be great medicine for deer and bear aro...

I gotta agree with Kirk, to a reloader nothing is obsolete. I reloaded for a .401 Winchester 1910, know what brass I used? 7.62x39 and it worked great! I also load for the .22 Jett, it uses .357 mag brass. How many boxes of that ammo have you seen on the shelf?

Re: '95 Winchester .30-40 Krag or .30-06
The 30-40 is just as good today as it was years ago. My 95 was made in 1932 and is a sweetheart to shoot EVEN with the crescent steel butt plate. I have shot it quite a few times sitting and prone and hardly notice the recoil with factory Remington 180gr ammo. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii30...

I don't have a .405 in a 95 but I do have an Encore barrel chambered in the caliber. It's a real thumper! I do have an original 95 chambered in 30-40 Krag.

I mostly grip the front of the frame where the forearm touches. With this I don't put any pressure or torque on the barrel. I have also put my left hand on a tree and supported as far up the barrel as possible by laying the mag tube on my thumb. I haven't noticed any change in accuracy.

Re: 405 Winchester & 45-70
The 45-70 can handle alot of bullet weights as you pointed out and can be easily loaded hotter for the 95 and Ruger, the .405 is pretty much relegated to 300gr bullets unless you lengthen the chamber to handle 400gr bullets, and it's a little harder to load hotter.
