Been using brass or nylon brushes for nearly 80 years - no damage to bore I can see - shouldn't try to reverse course in mid barrel I'm told - at least with brass one. Do use a nylon brush (for my 45 ACP) to clean chamber so there is some reversing there -

Every week - minimum of three 8 round mags through each of two Colt Government Model 45 ACPs - more, if I need to improve results. Half dozen ten round mags through Ruger Target Model 22 pistol and usually 10 round box of ammo through one or the other rifle - M1a or lever actions in 30-30 and 30-06....

The largest elk rack by B&C list for many years was taken just west of Crested Butte, Colorado with a Winchester 95 in 30-40 Krag caliber - I've seen both the rack and the rifle - and the rifle was one of the original "slabsides" - so evidently, it is plenty adequate for elk hunting.
