2009 buck

Post by Buffboy »

Sunday was the last day of the season for our "any" deer tags. They turn into anterless tags for a later reopening of the season so we aren't done yet. The wife will try for an anterless to fill out later this year.

The wife and I were hunting a cornfield, had just crossed and seen only small deer. We were going back across to walk again against the wind. About 30yards into the field I look down the row and see this deer trotting towards me. A quick glance with my binocs showed horns, and large size, we'd gotten to the not picky point earlier that day. I lined up with the 38-55 and dropped the hammer on him.

He's an old buck, I'm guessing 7, maybe 8, on the downhill side of antler size. I'll bet he had a lot bigger rack last year. This year it looks like he must have damaged it in the velvet. Physically, he was huge, probably the biggest whitetail I've ever taken and maybe the biggest even counting muleys. Almost no fat on him but lots of meat.

It's only fitting that an old buck that has stayed the course over the years be killed by an old rifle that has stayed the course over the years in an old cartridge that has stayed the course over the years.

Great shot, great deer!!! Thanks for sharing.

Outstanding, doubly rewarding since you used the old Marlin.

I don't hunt for antler size, but for meat, and that there buck has got a lot of meat on him. Nice buck.

A real nice buck and a fine looking rifle, in a great caliber.

The Marlin has the 26" Special Smokeless Steel barrel and dates to 1905 by serial number. The load was worked up with Stone Fence's .378 250gr jacketed bullets about 4 years ago. It's a Winchester case, CCI 200 primer, 26.0gr of RL-7. In my rifle it runs 1550fps and groups into an inch at 100yards when I do my part. I've always wondered how well it would really do with something besides the original sights but I'm not drilling any holes in the Marlin to mount a scope  . I've never recovered a bullet that has hit a deer so I don't know how it expands. I know it's pretty easy on meat even when it's traveled a long ways through it and kills real well.

The buck was shot at about 40 yards down the corn row as he walked (he'd slowed, wondering what I was) toward me. The doe I shot earlier this season was at about 225yards.
