My .45-60 ammo stash (photo)

Post by KirkD »

Thought some of you fellows who appreciate obsolete cartridges would enjoy this photo. My shipment of forty .45-60 brass arrived a couple weeks ago. Tonight, I finally got them all loaded. They are for my original Winchester Model 1876, shipped in 1886. There's something about these fat .45-60 cartridges that makes them one of my favorite. My load of 26.2 grains of 5744 under the 300 grain cast GC bullet gives 1,337 fps with an E.S. of 9 fps and an S.D. of 4 fps. The smaller cartridges in the belt are for my old S&W 2nd Model American top break .44 Russian.

Kirk,

As usual your photo is top notch. Is there a place where I can get a higher resolution copy to use as my desktop wallpaper?

Darn-it Kirk. Now I've gone and ruined yet another keyboard, filled with drool!

Fantastic picture, as always!!! 8) I've got two questions for you.

(1) Did you use any TP in your load this time?

(2) Where did you find that awesome cartridge belt?

I've got me a new desktop wallpaper!

Thanks! :D

VERY Nice. I always enjoy your posts. They generally show your photographic eye and attention to detail, they reveal the quality of your firearms and your sense of the history, and they are informative to the uninformed. Thanks so much.

SJPrice, PM me with your email address and I'll email you a hi-res version you can use for a nice, sharp desktop photo.

Ysabel Kid, I did not use any filler in this load. It seems to work just fine without it, although the bullet does have a gas check on it. Regarding the cartridge belt, I had it custom made by Ron Reed in Cody. I specified 20 rifle loops and 10 pistol loops for the 45-70/45-60 and 44 Russian/45 Colt/45 Schofield. He did an top notch job. The leather is thick and supple and the belt is put together perfectly.
