The two most commonly encountered chamberings for the 336 is 30 WCF @ 38,000 CUP and the 35 Rem @ 35,000 CUP. But we know the 336 has been improved (round bolt for example) and metallurgy advanced in the last 100 years and chamberings such as the 7-30 Waters @ 40,000 CUP, 307 Win @ 52,000 CUP, 356 & 358 @ 52,000 CUP, and now the 308 MX @ 47,500 CUP have proven to be successful. So why has there not been a Marlin 336 in 300 SAV which tops out at 46,000 CUP?

I would argue that it made more sense for Marlin to bring out a 336 300 Sav rather than intorduce the 308MX because traditionalist make up many of the 336 buyers and they view the 300 Sav as "one of their own" and the wide availablity of brass and dies and name recognition would be a boost to sales.

And if you can do a 300 Sav in a Marlin 336 then maybe you could do a 250 Sav? The 250 Sav is everything a 243 is and more. What a great first hunting rifle for an youngster....a youth stocked Marlin 336 in 250 Savage.

Wm

P.S. I need to go back to work.....if I have time to ruminate about this I have too much time to ruminate.

They won't do it, because some moron would stuff the magazine full of spire point ammo. I do believe that is why the gun co.s never chambered the .308 winny, instead they came up with the .307.

That pretty much tells the tale.

But, with the other cartridges you mentioned being available, why go to the bother of the .300 Savage. It just doesn't quite make sense.

Wouldn't the rim and the lack of one have something to do with it as well?

The .35 Remington, chambered in the Marlin 336 since 1950, is a rimless case, Rusty.

Remington licked the problem of spire pointed 300 Sav ammo with their pump action 14. It seems like a similar solution could be managed by Marlin.

I guess it could be done but the marketing people did not think it would sell and that is the bottom line. Too bad because I think 336s in 300 and 250 Savage wouldbe a heckuva firearm.

Just rechamber your 336 to 30-30 Ackley Improved. Its no trick to get 2500 fps with 150 grain bullets. No, you can't equal the 300 Savage, but you can get right up under it in velocity ;)

Tests were done with the 250 Savage in a spiral grooved magazine.

Is there any documental proof of a 30-30 or 32 speecial setting off a primer in a tublar mag? There is in 45 cal WFN in 336 or 95 Marlin. Placing 30-30 rounds on a flat surface loaded with 130gr hp does not touch the primer. I have the mag blocked so only two will fit in the mag so only have a two shot rifle. But I still question this but dont have any intention of trying it out and reporting on it.

respectfully
Bob

Remington used spiral grooved mags on its pump guns - the spirals ensure that the tip of the bullet never contacts the primer of the round up-stream...

I remember Elmer Kieth wrote up that Marlin was going to bring their 336 out in the 300 Savage. He was excited about it. It dropped off the horizon and didn't mention it again IIRC. I think it was also mentioned in his book "Hell I was there."

SOME things just don't go well together.

Like Ice cream & motor oil...

Why not chamber Colt's 1911 in .45-70...?

if hornanday would have loaded the .307 and .356 wcf's with gummy tips and brought them up to LIGHT MAGNUM STANDARDS[before factoring the gummy tips];you would have had cartridges exceeding the .300 savage, 308 and 338 marlins. they would have been very, very, close to the .308,358,probably exceeding the grand .348wcf. WHY, hornandy didn't choose this path blows my mind :o

The report I saw said that using a 307 or 356 case didn't allow seating a pointed bullet of the weight they wanted and still stay within maximum cartridge length limits. So, they shortened the case to give more bullet room.

The 250 savage which is rated at 45k CUP had sticky extraction problems , that is why it didn't go into production. I would assume the 300 savage tapered case gave the same problem. I tried to do the conversion to a Glenfield rifle a few years ago . But the local gunsmith wouldn't do it. It wasn't worth the cost shipping it to someone to do it , it was more of a tinkering project.
