This Girl will shoot.

The range is 33 yards. I am sitting on the ground, leaning back against a tree, I'm holding the gun with both hands between my knee's. four shots in a tad over 5/8" with the fifth a flyer. A second group also had a flyer on the fifth shot! I know this old boy who said that it might be the barrel warming up and causing the flyer. Or it could be, I just need more practist.

So what's the magazine capacity. Is it possible that the mag spring is unloaded after the 5th is loaded and that is causing this?

Nice group. Better than I can do with any pistol at that range!

The magazine will hold 8.

I only loaded 5 for the group shooting. I don't think it's the spring, although it could be.

I will keep watching this and see if it continues to happening, then I will know if it's the gun or me.

It's still a bit early in the life of this gun to come to any conclusions.

Fantastic!

I'd really love to see a video of these guys if you can pull that off. Even shot with a cell phone and uploaded to YouTube would be fine, I'd just really like to see 'em in action!

Charlie,

You have fans all around the world. I've had bunches view your epic on building the rifle from France, Germany, and just a couple of days ago, the Netherlands. Some mention following you guys on Practical Machinist, too.

Due to reasons beyond my control I have not visited for a while, so I come back and encounter a completely unexpected treat. The superlatives have been consistant but far from overused. What can I add?

I am jealous, but in an appreciative way. I may be past my time to develop the skill to start and complete such a project but I am going to inverstigate and give it a try...encouaging my two beautiful young boys to join me to take up such a wonderful and rewarding endeavour.

I don't know if this expression is used in the US, but here in Oz when we see something surprising and extraordinary and are shocked into silence for a short period we say we are Gobsmacked. That's pretty much what I have been for 11 pages Charlie, Gobsmacked.

Thanks for that mate.

Fabulous work! Great thread. I found the pistol thread the other day, and then this one today. Happy Happy.

One thing that did depress me a little is that I want to learn to drill and rifle barrels as expediently as possible. That was how I found the pistol thread. Now that the US is controlling it's firearm exports more carefully there are a bunch of barrels that at very hard to get so I can't just call up a seller and buy what I want in all cases. Of course it would still be easier to buy what I need than to build, but the difference is that I have a real reason to move ahead with the barrel making given how hard it can be to get barrels.

So... I was not happy to hear you have not been able to do the longer barrels... I have just been doing the research at this stage, Bill's barrel making video, the pope book. Ideally finding a slow method of drilling that did not require high pressure oil would suit me, if possible. Anyway, inspiring stuff, thanks for the incredible online journey.

I think I've already expressed being over-awed by your accomplishment... so will just wonder aloud about that "flyer". You might consider shooting for that "group" by single loading. The flyer might be caused by some inherent balance being "upset" by the change from partially loaded magazine to empty magazine. Or load six, and see if that has an affect on balance and harmonics.

By the way, great display!

I don't know how this slipped away from me for so long.

That turned out to be one of the most outstanding examples of awesomeness I have ever seen. I love how it all came together and the fact that she is a shooter only makes it better. Charlie you are to be commended.

I'm on Leverguns almost every day....HOW DID I MISS THIS!!!

Reading this thread has been an absolute joy. The skill, the effort, the extended experience and the hard and careful work to develop your talents to produce this rifle were a real pleasure to read and enjoy.

Thanks very much...in a world too full of very mediocre products and skills, laced heavily with excuses, this has given me a strong realization and renewed hope that we still have first class craftsman and people among us.

I love it when someone re-discovers this thread! It's simply stunning work in my view.

BTW, I was at a gun show this weekend and one of the dealers had a Volcanic pistol in his case for sale. I asked him, "How much for the Volcanic?" His eyes lit up and he smiled and commented that he was happy I knew what it was. Oh, it was $7000 asking.

I did not come home with it.

All I can say is ''WOW'' . Yes the Volcanic is incredable. I've never seen one in person.

I had to settle for a Uberti Henry, but at least I got something.

That Girl with the camera told me every move to make.
I didn't get a chance to show these babies shuffling and shucking the cartridges :(
She was also the editor.

Did you hear the different sound between the Rifle and the Pistol?
They were shooting the same cartridge.

i am stunned at the work you do! love these early lever guns. my dream would be to have one built that handled 22 long rifle. what fun that would be.
there was a fellow in meteetse wyoming he advertised that he was going to make them. i contacted him, but i think he abandoned the project.

your skills simply amaze me.
