Which mare's leg loop do you like better?
I've been watching all the episodes of "Wanted: Dead or Alive" since rjohns94 let me know they were available at Amazon.com. As noted here before, Steve McQueen in the role of bounty hunter Josh Randall carried at least two variations of the mare's leg; one with a larger roughly oval-shaped lever and one with a tear-drop shaped large lever.
So, which one do you like better?
I'm leaning towards the latter. Both look cool, but for me, that one had the edge!

I think I'm with you on the tear-drop ... but I reserve the option to go back and watch them all again just to make sure!

Post some pics to remind, but as I recall I think the latter (tear drop) as well--for that shortened format. For Lucas' 20" carbine, I'd say the rounder "D" loop of the two versions he had.

Good idea gak!
Here's one of the photo's from Jeff Quinn's article in "Gunblast" on the new Mare's Leg from Puma/Legacy Sports:
http://www.gunblast.com/Puma-MaresLeg.htm
The Legacy Sports website has the same gun listed.
As you can see though when you go to the Gallery of Guns link on the Gunblast article, the lever is different than the one Jeff tested - and different than any used in the series!

The one he starts the series out with looks more like this, though this one appears to be a little more rounded.

I agree completely gak - for the larger, "full size" carbine (buttstock and barrel), the D-ring or a rounded "John Wayne" large lever loop looks a lot better. For what is now for all practical purposes (and currently sold as) a pistol, I like the "tear drop" lever!

I'd have to go with the rounded lever instead of the tear-drop on this one.

The other question is, do you prefer the rounded barrel or the hex barrel version, They used both in the series too.

The "JW" lever shown all over the Internet on the Legacy Sport BH is not what they're selling. LS says that was a prototype version, it also had a slightly longer stock nub.
What comes on them is the teardrop, and that's the one I prefer.

Re: Which mare's leg loop do you like better?
Here's both. The late version was an octagon barrel gun. Neither gun had sights.
As for the big loop lever style used on the John Wayne guns. As best as I can tell there were three styles used on both 20" and 16" guns.
The True Grit gun used the smaller or 3/4 style lever.
And it appears to be a 20".
But he also had the full size big loop on some of his guns. There was a 16" with the really big loop used in one of the movies. I just can't find still pictures of it.

Not a Mare's Leg, but THIS is the kind of loop I like. (...the gun's not too bad either... )

NJK - thanks for the better pictures!!!
Mike - I think I'd prefer a "mix-match"; a "tear-drop" lever with a round barrel!

Re: Which mare's leg loop do you like better?
+1 Ysabel Kid--mix n match the tear drop with round barrel, though I admit the tear drop looks a little too "refined" for something someone might've figured out--or at least done--in the old days...the perfect proportions and radii, etc...I guess I just described any Win or Marlin lever!--but I'm mostly thinking the rounded triangular shape. . Also, the octagonal is extra weight--albeit for not very much length, but ever oz. counts--one wouldn't need to be carrying around in a pistol (type)-caliber shooting "side arm," IMO. This is one of those irrational, non-sensical guns (virtually no (practical) advantage over the traditional sixgun, and some disadvantages (weight and wieldability) and even less or no more capacity--but I want one too!

How come I knew that going to "enablers central" here would not result in anyone talking me out of this?!?
Now, if I can just save some gun funds for a little bit. Gotta stay away from the classifieds here... and ignore incoming pm's from certain not-to-be-named fellow enablers!!!
