The 30-30's "magic bullet"

Post by Bogie35 »

I have studied and used the 35 Remington a great deal. It's clear to me that the 200 grain Core-Lokt is a nearly "magical" bullet when loaded at typical 35 Remington velocities. It produces an excellent combination of expansion and penetration, and it's very accurate in my rifle. If I had to use only one 35 Remington load for all medium to large game in North America, it would be a 200 grain Core-Lokt at around 2200 fps.

But, what about the 30-30? What is IT'S "magic" bullet and load? I've heard and read good things about the 150 grain Power Point, 170 grain Silver Tip, 170 grain Nosler Partition, and 190 grain Hawk. I'm sure there are others as well. But, what's YOUR pick for the best combination of expansion and penetration (and reliability) at typical 30-30 velocities?

Thanks!

bogie

I like the speer bullets for the 30-30, they always have given me the best in accuracy and velocity.

170 Grain Core locs for this Deer Hunter. Usually drops Whitetail dead in there tracks.
Last 2 deer I shot dropped with 1 foot from where I shot em. :D

My personal favorite is the 170 Grain Hornady Flat Point. In my mind I would like to try the 150 grain speer due to a little better range, but the Hornady just simply keeps working for me. Whitetail Bucks just hate that Bullet !

I like that big flat tip on the Hornady 170 gr. but I think the truth is that there are a number of excellent bullets for the .30-30.

Like Hobie says, there are a number of magic bullets for the 30-30. The reason is that the 30-30 shoot their bullets at the "magic" velocity of around 2200 where jacketed bullets hold together, whether they are Remington, Sierra, Hornady, Winchester....................

Like anything else, you just got to know it's limitations. ----------Sixgun

I'm with Six - the materials always worked at those velocities unlike the early .243s

Even though it's a newcomer to the bullet market I think the Winchester/Nosler CT Ballistic Silvertip 150 grain might be it.

I'm not a hunter, but the 165gr Hornady Leverevolution groups extremely well in my Win 94 and at .30-30 velocities I trust that the high-tech Hornady bullet would do its' job well. You get a flatter trajectory with more retained velocity and energy with the Leverevolution ammo as well. I'm pretty sure it's a boat tailed bullet, however, so it may not be the best choice for a worn or roomy barrel.

Bogie, I believe the bullet weight can vary as to the hunting conditions open distance shooting with no apex predators around a person could use a 150 in dark timber with things around that want to eat the game or you 170-180's. I use 170 hdy & HCGC as they penetrate well and buck brush better than lighter bullets and have loaded up this winter some hdy 180 RN that I will try out this spring for accuracy and velocity. danny

With 110+ years of experimenting, just about anything made for the 30WCF HAS to work!!!!

But what do I know, I just been playing around with the 30/30 for about 2 1/2 years.

Bought a batch of Win. 150 gr Power Pt. for 3030 several years ago on sale for what today would seem like a real bargain. Question is how are they for hog hunting in Fla. next. winter. Contemplating a two month stay and am wondering if my 3030 with 150 grs is ok, also have a Marlin 357 I could use (seems alittle light for hogs) or should I use my 356/Win 94 with 200 gr. Rem. RN at 2330 fps???Any hog info appreciated. Have some good cast bullet:D :D t loads avail too. afish4570

150 core lokt. I have never seen a deer survive one.
125 sierra jhp kill just as good with gravy-like recoil.
