OT, Not OT, On Topic, Off Topic, etc... applied to posts

Post by Hobie »

Since anything is worthy of discussion here, in the appropriate forum, and since it seems that people have to be "cute" with the "OT" (meaning Off Topic), "Not OT" (never needed by the way), "OT" (as ON topic), and so forth and so on... I'm currently eliminating the preface from every post that comes up. NEW posts should not include it. If it is political it goes in the Politics Forum and IS on topic. If it is anything else it goes into the General Discussion Forum and IS on topic. If it is to sell, trade, buy, alert to sales elsewhere (auction or listings by other than the poster) it goes into the Classifieds Forum and IS on topic. IN OTHER WORDS, nothing is OFF topic.

What I would like to see is a topic title that actually describes the subject or at least leads into the subject.

The standards of the forum have never changed. This minor adjustment will simply save us from recent confusions and extra typing.

Ok, back to the regularly scheduled programming...
Sincerely,

Hobie

Thanks for the clarification.

One other thing posters can do to help is avoid really vague titles like "I need..." - I suppose they can draw a bigger 'audience' that way, but sometimes it is a bit annoying.

Thx for clearing that up. I was going by the old saying "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" and assuming anything other than a Levergun was OT whoops. Now just getting used to not doing that. How many chances do We get before We get the ruler on the back of the hand ? I can C right off that OI is going to be the Class trouble maker.

You STILL haven't read this topic, have you? I know because there are people out there still posting with the OT - preface.

This reminds me, isn't it about time for the quarterly "Too many 'OT' posts" post*...?

If so, what will the poor guy use for a title...?

(Actually, I just posted this to help Hobie by bumping this to the top...

...well, and to be a wise-guy, too... )

 That's funny Doc! Actually, I think we need to bump it up for those open in the new posts link because they aren't reading this and still posting "OT" and "On Topic" titles. Cut it out fellas, just put enough to identify the subject in the title. Thank you.

Joe, I believe it was you who pointed out that there was a confusing mess of OT meaning "off topic" AND "on topic" in the topic titles. Whoever it was, they were correct. There was no longer a need for differentiating since we started the other forums, limited as they are, because we don't limit our conversational topics.

Gotcha! I'll abide with yer requests, Hobie. What I'd like to see is more descriptive subject lines (more than one or two words) but I'm just a newcomer...

I agree with that! However, and I'm the same way, sometimes one thinks one has been very clear as to the meaning when one hasn't. This applies to topic titles as well. For myself, I try to think of how I'd read it if I was visiting the forum for the first time. I don't always succeed.

Well, as one who did mention the use of OT for both on & off topic posts I'll say "thanks Hobie." I HAD missed this thread as I usually "pg dn" from the top of a page, seldom looking at the stickies. Which added to my general state of confusion as I looked for responses to my query and the comment in one response that I didn't need it.

Griff, it seems that some still haven't read this. If it was your suggestion, I thank you. Obvious and reasonable.

If our members could make a gentle reminder to those who continue to post "OT" for either subject, I'd appreciate it.

What's annoying is when people make things up -- like posting things that are against the law in states where they have no clue about that state's laws just because they thought it'd be cool.

EDIT: There's a great example of what I'm talking about in this link -- 4th post down.

No "OT" in posts means just that. Again, this isn't difficult. Write a topic title that makes sense to others and write your post.

It's On Topic about Off Topic...

OT vs OT...

I think...

Maybe we should use Binary.
