Once he gets that cart rolling, I wonder how he steers it and shoots that rifle at the same time? And how does he keep his hat from blowing off?

Remember, Black bears are all real small, and it doesn't take much more than a pellet-gun to stop them. They won't ever hurt you, neither - fangs and claws on a 746 pound animal don't make it the least bit dangerous...BlaineG wrote:Impossible...those won't shoot a bear Field and Stream SAID so...

Just think, that big old bear was killed by one of those old non-automatic antique firearms. And with iron sights too!

Wow, what a trophy! Looks to be a shorty Marlin. Surely that's just a posed pic... no one actually shoots those antiques anymore, do they?

Hope it doesn't turn out to be like BOZO taken last year on Nov. 22. It was over 800 and shot 9 times with a crossbow. It was a hand fed kind of pet.

They grow them big in God's Country, eh John? Do you have any more details?
Re: 746 lb. PA Black bear!
Oh heck that old fellow is so fat, a one legged man could out run him. The poor old thing probably died of a coranary from chasing the hunter.AJMD429 wrote:Remember, Black bears are all real small, and it doesn't take much more than a pellet-gun to stop them. Re: 746 lb. PA Black bear!
That is a bear and a half! The area where I grew up (near the Riding Mountain National Park) has some of the largest Black Bears, according to an article in a Canadian geographic magazine published up here. Researchers tagged and monitored one Black Bear that weighted over 900 pounds. They figured that if they were to weigh the same bear just before hibernation, it would crack the 1,000 pound weight.

Betting there was piles of scat on either end of that rifle when this happened!
Re: 746 lb. PA Black bear!
WoW! Just makes me wonder how many picnic baskets that hunter has saved.

An ity-bitty 30-30 can hardly take one of those little Tx., deer. Big bear great rifle.
Re: 746 lb. PA Black bear!
WOW--that's a bear..ok that's been said before, but wow that's a really big bear... :)
I have one simple, yet profound question--how do you get a bear that size out of the woods
or how many friends does it take to drag that bear out of the woods..?
By the way thank you for posting this...

Re: 746 lb. PA Black bear!
The black bears have become very smart and have learned to adapt to living around humans.
Because of this I believe you will see the black bear become the largest bear species in the lower 48 ???
I mean they are thriving under people porches and everything and I mean some big ones??
I think there is already now somewhere in probably Potter County Pa a 1000 pound bear and if not, will be one in the not so distant future ??
I don't care if it's black/brown/white--------------any bear that size(kill ya quick with one blow)
Would be kinda like the difference of getting shot with a .30-06/.300 win mag/or a .338 win mag
At that level--------dead is dead!
Put it this way(two weeks before deer/bear season opens, bears around our place. Then week prior to opening day (people shooting their guns all over the mountains sighting them in) hopefully just sighting them in and not poaching? They vanish???????????

Re: 746 lb. PA Black bear!
Guys,
The Marlin is an earlier one since it does not have the ramp under the front sight. It appears to have been customized with the addition of a recoil pad and medallion in the stock. Don't know about the caliber. I'm trying to find out more info on it.

Hopefully you will have better luck than me. The guy who shot it is Amish so no hunting license or tagging was used so he never took it to the tagging station at the Coudersport fire hall.w30wcf wrote:Guys,

Re: 746 lb. PA Black bear!
Question Tycer, aren't those folks supposed to shun modern machinery of any kind? In which case he shoulda been using a flintlock, right? What would ol' Davy Crockett say! Of course if he hadn't yet taken his final vows I guess he's allowed a little leeway. Anyway, my Uncle & Aunt used to own a supper club in Hayward, Wi, (best place for muskie south of the border) back in the day, & they had a big one, in the 700 range, used to feed at their garbage dump. Aunt Ann called him Bruno, (what else?) & treated him with those giant cans of Hershey's chocolate syrup. He'd stick his nose in the open bar door & she'd hold the can up to his face so he could suck the syrup right out of it! Poor bugger was killed being hit by a car. jd45
