I was wrong the factory twist on my 260 REM barrel is 1-8 .

But the barrel on the 98 Mauser 6.5-06 I had was a Shilen #3 1-9 .

Well I'm pretty cemented in I want another 6.5-06 but this time on a 700 action instead of the 98 mauser .

But I've also been researching the 6.5-300 Weatherby a good bit and it's semi clones .

That 300 Weatherby case just plain necked down to 6.5mm was the crown jewel of the 1,000 yard bench rest set back in the early 70's . So it seems to me it still outta be a decent hunting round out to lets say 400 to possibly 500 yards provided the nut on the stock is up to the task at hand .

So now I am thinking I "need" a pair

I have a Remington 700 Classic in 8mm Mag, and the STW uses the 8mm case. That's why I threw that out there. 8mm Mag brass is pretty hard to find so I make alot of mine from fire formed 375 H&H. I don't have a H&H and the 8Mag case has a straighter body taper so it won't fit any way. I don't shoot the 8 Mag much as much as I like to but it has taken a deer and a black bear. It did a dandy job. Hopefully one day it will take an elk in this state or Ky!

I rechambered a brand new Remington 700BDL 7mm REM MAG stainless synthetic rifle to 7mm STW shortly after the cartridge made print in the gun mags . Back then one also had to make their own brass as you say . I got 200 pieces of 8mm REM MAG and went to town . When I sodl the gun all the brass went with it .

I was given a new 700BDL 8mm REM MAG for Xmas in 1977 or 1978 . I shot it not alot and traded it off a few years later for a 20 gauge 1100 I believe along with a case of 20 gauge skeet loads . Wish I had the 8 MAG back because I certainly don't have the 20 gauge anylonger .

The 8 Mag is definately a good all around cartridge for this continent. If I were a one gun kind of guy it would probably be the one.

Course he was just shooting factory Weatherby loads???
I've got a 270 Weatherby in a Ruger #1B that does okay , but then I'm no longer a big .277" person either . Got a Ruger #1B in both the 300 Weatherby and the 300 WIN MAG and I ain't really a big .308" person either .

But the idea of a 6.5mm on the 270 Weatherby case , the 300 Weatherby case or even the 378 Weatherby case intrests me a good bit !

A 6.5mm on the 300 WIN MAG or 7mm Ultra MAG case is also a good bit intresting .

Man cannot live by chunking big hunks of lead out of 444's and 45-70's alone !
One also needs speed demon barrel burning pieces of copper as well
I agree! I Love my Weatherbys! ;>)
