Point of interest for John Wayne fans
60 years ago today the movie "The Quiet Man" was released in movie theatres.

My favorite Wayne movie.
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

We have a WWI era theater in our town that lately has been playing old movies once in a while. Last month I got to see Stagecoach on the big screen.

Not to highjack this thread but the very WORST John Wayne movie in my opinion has to be the 1956 "The Conqueror" where he plays Genghis Khan. Howard Hughes dumped a ton of money into this joke of a movie. I don't recall one Asian actor in the bunch, pretty funny. If I recall correctly this movie was filmed in the desert nuclear testing site and several cast & crew got cancer a few years later. Sad.
One of my favorite John Wayne movies as a kid was "The Cowboys".

I never heard of that one....That it sucked is probably why A ton of those old B movies he made with Yakima Canutt were just awful.. worse than that, maybeFriends Call Me Ji wrote:Not to highjack this thread but the very WORST John Wayne movie in my opinion has to be the 1956 "The Conqueror" where he plays Genghis Khan. Only time I ever heard the Duke referred to as a mollycoddle. The fight scene with the Brother-in-law was great. The stop for a beer and a short rest was just too funny.

Big John Wayne fan here. My faves are probably The Shootist and McClintock.
Seems that I heard that when JW started making westerns he actually used his own personal Colt's SAA in 38-40. I cannot document this, perhaps some of you'uns know more.

Actually Ji IIRC a lot of the people that were filming THE CONQUERS in the desert came down with cancer.
I think it was something like 60-70% of them.

Dennie, I think you are right. I want to say that I read that in one of those Old West shooting magazines (cant remember the name of it). The single action that he wore in Big Jake was his personal one I believe. It had a off yellow/orange colored grips.

RustyJr, I do get Guns Of The Old West, possibly where I got the info. I really like this mag. It covers lots of old west guns, new and old, and old west info. My new mag covers the guns used in Hell On Wheels. Also like the articles on the stars of the old westerns. This issue covers Randolf Scott. Good stuff. And nary an EBR groundhog gun!

"The Conqueror" is one of the few JW movies I have never seen. Always wanted to watch it but never had the chance.
"The Barbarian and the Geisha" I haven't seen since I was a child. It showed at noon on Channel 5 on "John Wayne Theater". That was in Phoenix.
