Kid with the 360 DW strikes again - buck deer down

Post by 86er »

Today Brandon and I sat in a pop-up blind starting at about 4:20PM. At around 5:05 we saw some movement through the woods. After another minute we could see antlers. Where we are hunting the only legal bucks are spikes (one unbranched antler) and those with a 13" inside spread. Does can only be taken during 4 doe days or during one of the youth seasons. Not getting our hopes because we didn't figure it to be a big one I kept watching through the Leupold binoculars. When the buck wandered through a few more clear spots I was able to tell he was indeed a spike, with the right antler being completely unbranched and the left side having a brow tine and a little kicker. Long story short we made a few mistakes. Instead of just popping open the back window of the blind when the buck got out of view we actually unzipped it and stepped out. The buck didn't look our way but may have heard something because he put his head down behind some trees and froze. The shot was a hard quartering away at right close to 100 yds. Brandon hit is a little back and low but the bullet exited in the back of the rib cage and the buck dropped right there. That's his first buck. The rifle is a 16" Win 94 in 360DW, shooting a 180gr XTP @ 1920 fps. That is the 32nd big game animal that was killed consecutively with that rifle and one shot. We both have doe tags that we can use in a different part of the State for another 3 weeks but I think we got enough deer. Maybe something else....

That is a pretty good shot, 100 yds with that gun and bullet. Granted, is small deer compared to the Giant hooved critters here, but still says alot for it.

I am still kicking around making my Marlin into a 360DW, I think the little extra performance makes it more useful. And that bullet is a thumper. But I have alot going on, and that is just another "on the list" project.

Not offhand, we rested it on the side of a tree with my arm under it for support.

Okay...I have to ask. What is a DW360? This is a new one to me.

The caliber is a bit longer than 357 Magnum but not as long as 357 maximum. The rifle has a simple .21 chamber ream and polish. The cartridge guides had to be filed back a little to handle the length. It'll still shoot 38's or 357 Mags. The 360DW hits the sweet spot with the 180 gr. XTP as far as bullet performance. Look at its track record in just this rifle.

First buck, way to go! That little gun is hammering critters. It looks pretty thick in there. A 100 yards in that stuff is a tough shot.
