Football is Coming

Post by Griff »

Surely this will offend you all:

There's nothing that cleanses your soul like getting the hell kicked out of you." - Woody Hayes / Ohio State

"I never graduated from Iowa, but I was only there for two terms - Truman's and Eisenhower's." – Alex Karras / Iowa

"Football is NOT a contact sport, it is a collision sport. Dancing IS a contact sport." - Duffy Daugherty / Michigan State

Ohio State 's Urban Meyer on one of his players:"He doesn't know the meaning of the word fear. In fact, I just saw his grades and he doesn't know the meaning of a lot of words.”

Why do Tennessee fans wear orange? So they can dress that way for the game on Saturday, go hunting on Sunday, and pick up trash on Monday.

What does the average Alabama player get on his SATs? Drool.

What do you say to a Florida State University football player dressed in a three-piece suit? "Will the defendant please rise."

How can you tell if a Clemson football player has a girlfriend? There's tobacco juice on both sides of the pickup truck.

What do you get when you put 32 Arkansas cheerleaders in one room? A full set of teeth.

University of Michigan Coach Jim Harbaugh is only going to dress half of his players for the game this week; the other half will have to dress themselves.

How do you get a former Illinois football player off your porch? Pay him for the pizza.

Yawn. I gave up on the cry babies in pro sports years ago. Now college ball is getting almost as bad. I'm down to the local high school games. And, even then some of the kids need a serious attitude adjustment via a swift kick in the behind.

Sadly, most professional sports here are deteriorated into some form of "thug-bowl".

The NFL is a private business. They have a helluva marketing scheme, but I cannot get excited about their organization.

Sadly, the NFL is needed to keep millions of small-thinking worker bees entertained.

In the only state to let voters decide, AZ had a Sunday holiday for the Reverend King. The NFL spent five years and tens of millions of NFL patrons' dollars to get a weekday holiday for MLK, blackmailing (no pun intended) the citizens by withdrawing a Superbowl from the state until the citizens voted for it. This cost the AZ people $14 million in tax money for the additional state holiday during the week. The NFL Commissioner (Tagliabue) pushed this through the state political system personallyThe voters tuned it down three more years until the proposal was broken into three non-understandable pieces. Dr. Martin Luther King was finally reduced to an NFL mascot in all 50 states.
Go to Hell, NFL.

I may be biased a tad...
I'm positive God created the universe... I'm just not convinced He had any choice in the matter.

I suspect that many of us participated in organized sports as youngsters. But, had we even tried to pull one of the minor stunts the pros and college players do we'd have been kicked off the team, ostracized by our peers, and had the holy stuff knocked out of us by our dads.

While I know we had some of "those" parents in little league, and a few more in high school sports, for the most part our parents & grandparents were much better behaved than those I see today attending the games.

I am reminded of a very old saying that is proving itself true with much regularity. "Spare the rod, spoil the child". There are no real ramifications for poor conduct and flat out criminal behavior by pro, college and even now some high school players.

Think about it. A pro quarter back stands accused of cheating, and it ends up going darn near to the Supreme Court, just because he is give a four game suspension. Whether he did or didn't do what he was accused of, it is just one of the latest examples of the type of folks that inhabit every facet of pro sports.

And why, all for money.

Well said. These guys get paid millions to play a game. Granted, they play it better than 99.99% of the population could, but it is still a game. They should at least have the decency to act like the role-models they mistakenly are to many youths. Yet they act like thugs and spoiled brats, for the most part. Not all, but enough to sour me for sure.

I liked it when they had grooming standards and dress standards. If you didn't like it, you didn't have to get paid big bucks. They should bring these back.

Speaking of role models, a few years back the kid on the Wheaties box turned out to be less than worthy. The folks that make Wheaties looked around and found a dearth of sports stars fit to be on their box. So, they brought back some of the stars from my youth, and one that was an oops. Well nobodies perfect, and how were they to know this man was really a woman in a man's body.

And folks wonder why I crave the fifties.

Well, I love my college football, and it is looking like a very competitive Pac-12 this fall. Not sure where my Ducks will end up, but polls put them third for fourth -- quite a come down from previous seasons. That means a lot of the games will be nail-biters instead of gimmes, which is fine by me.
