Ever been to Sonny Bryan's down on Inwood by Parkland Hospital?

Used to be an old girl taking orders down there that kept a half-moon hub-cap on the counter for an ashtray. The thing was ALWAYS piled about 4 inches high with old smokes burned right down into the filter. She had one of those smokers voices where you'd wonder if she worked part time as a drill-instructor or had maybe just gargled with battery acid. Thing was, she NEVER knocked the ash off her smoke. You'd go in and she'd be sucking on a 3 inch ash with a filter at one end. Just let it drop wherever gravity and the Lord directed.

"You want sauce with that?" "Uh... No Ma'am. I'm fine."

The first time I ate at the local restaurant and bar in the little mountain town near me (pop 200) the owner, who is likely this womans twin, was in the kitchen stating she had a .38 with 6 bullets with the Culligan mans name on them if he thought he was going to come and take her water softener that had been supplied by ****** Water after they drained the aquifer and made local water unusable without filtration. My carpenter and I just put our heads down and ate quietly. Another time some city folks came in and tried to order something that wasn't on the menu and it was very similar to this clip with her yelling out of the kitchen that if she wanted to cook something that way she would have put it on the menu. The city folk left stating they would never come back and she shouted back good, tell your friends.

That video is an extract from « Comancheria ». I saw that movie 2 weeks ago. I was positively surprised that almost everyone in Texas do carry a gun, and that they are ready to use it if necessary.

Is that true?

In France, most of my fellow citizen would be feared of living in a state like Texas (I won't!). Forgive them for their ignorance, but they truly believe – and I do not agree with them for many reasons - that a society in which every responsible citizen is armed is a dangerous society.
So, regarding firearm, there is an intriguing gape between the way a French thinks and a – true / authentic - American think. Isn’t it?

Bulldozer,

As you may recall, there was an incident where the British attempted to take some cannons from some colonists. That incident sparked a revolt that eventually led to the formation of the United States, with the assistance of our French brethren. Owning firearms and using them in self defense has been a key part of our heritage from that moment, and of course is written in to and preserved by our primary governing document, The Constitution. Despite the rabid efforts of the liberal (commie) infested metropolitan centers, the people of the central western part of the US remain in spirit and deed as proud descendants of those freedom loving colonists. There is a large area of the country which parallels both sides of the Rocky Mountains and is made up of mostly ranching and farming areas that remains true to this. To put in perspective, that area is roughly four times the size of France. Within that area the majority of people own and carry firearms daily and hunting and shooting is our culture.

I don't know about everyone but in the part of Texas where I live it is quite common. I walked into a restaurant/country store the other day and there was a guy eating his meal, and he had a Colt 1911 semi-auto on his hip .. open carry. No one paid any attention to him.

Back in 1988 or 89 we had The Shootists Holiday at Cody, Wyoming. We all stayed at a motel on the edge of town and had a range set up on the other side of the highway where we would go an shoot. We had targets out to 800 yards or so. We were there 5 days and in the middle of this some tourists from France stopped, looking for a motel to stay at. When they saw all the guns they were nervous and the lady asked "Is it safe to stay here?" We told her, "Ma'am .. this is THE SAFEST motel in all of Wyoming."
They ended up staying and going shooting with us .. and they had a great time!

I find that it is not just people from other countries ... much of America in certain places has that same fear of firearms.

In America the places you might get shot are the big cities. This is exactly why I carry everyday. France has had recent mass shootings. Imagine if a couple of trained citizens had been on scene with their legally owned, concealed firearms?

Most folks here in Arkansas carry, permits or not. I finally got my permit, but we don't have open carry yet.

I don't open carry. I have it planned out: If I'm confronted, I'll put on my Heart Attack face, put my hand to my chest over my heart, under my vest, and come out with an LCP blazing away.... Don't laugh, Imma serious. I hope they don't see me first, though.

Right. History gives us some clues.
France is located in the “middle west” of Europe. During our 2000 years of history, we had to fight against many invaders. South west: Spanish and sometimes, Muslims, South est: Italians, Est: Austrians, North east: Prussians North west: English people, and from time to time, Norwegians.
So perhaps my fellow citizen considers firearms as “a tool for war”. When it is war times, Firearms goes from under our beds in order to repel the invasion. War is over? Peace time? Thank you guns, good bye and have a nice rest… until next time!

Ok. So it is true. In some part of USA you may see people carrying "openly", or you may even encounter many armed citizen walking in a street, going freely to a show or something else…
It is not something you may see here. I don’t think so.
But certainly, the fear of firearm is not necessarily depending on countries, but much more on education?

Sure. According to some specialists involved in French national security, those tragic events demonstrated, that the firearm density in France is much too low regarding the threat we are facing.
Even our socialist government had to recognize it. It recently purchased hundreds of assault weapons, thousands of bulletproof vest, in order to equip our policemen.
Now you may see Famas, HKG36, mini 14, Usm1, Beretta M12… openly carryed everywhere in the street of Paris!

Do a "Google" search on "Shootists Holiday" and you'll find a number of articles about their get-togethers over the years. A group of by-invitation-only, "gunnies" that have an annual get-together. See this NRA article as an example: Shootist's Holiday. There's at least one article by Jim Taylor on the Leverguns Articles page. An excellent resource that all too often overlooked.
