Likely age of Savage 99?

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Happened to spot an older 99 in a local gun shop yesterday. I wish I had paid closer attention, but it looked to have a 26-inch round barrel, straight grip and crescent butt. It was chambered in .30-30. Guessing 1920s or earlier?

Hard to say for sure Bill, without more info. But a very long 26" barrel would usually indicate an early manufacture, as later the 99 came with shorter 24" or 22" barrels. The crescent buttplate would also indicate earlier mfg.

You're right Sixgun. The cocking indicator protrudes through the receiver right behind the bolt opening. Except the very earliest 1899, which had a hole in the breech bolt with a "C" or "S" in the hole when the gun was cocked or safe. Similar to the earlier 1895 Savage.

But you must be feeling better Bill, if you're out looking in gun shops!
