Uberti 1876 .45-60 shooters please

Where are you guys getting your brass with the proper rim thickness? I tried cut down Winchester .45-70 brass but the action will not close. I suspect the rims are too thick. Thanks, 1886.

I have never tried winchester 45-70 but I use trimmed remington and it does very well.

You got my curiosity up so I did some measuring and foung that the winchester cases have .005 greater thickness than remington. I trimmed one and sized it and found that they do not want to chamber easily in either of my Taylor's. I also measured some star-line brass and they measured exactly the same as the remington.

I used Federal .45-70 brass for my Uberti 76. Trimmed the cases in a Forester case trimmer then ran them into my Lyman .45-60 sizer. No problem there at all.

i will tell you what i did. hope this is the info you are looking for. i made my 45-60 cases from 45-70 brass. the brand makes no difference. first trim the rim to a thickness of .058 to .060. 45-70 brass that i have measured is .064 to .069. if the headspace on your 76 is correct the 45-70 rim is too thick and the lever will not close or is really tight. once you have trimmed the rim to the proper thickness then trim the case to a oal of 1.890. if you don't have 45-60 dies you can do what i did. that is buy a set of lee 45-70 dies and trim the length of the bullet seating die by .250 (shorten it) this will let you crimp the bullet in the case. i also bought a 45-70 factory crimp ddie from lee and nocked the inside out and trimmed it by the difference in the 45-70 case and the 45-60. this will give you a factory crimp die for the 45-60. i made 150 cases this way and have loaded some of them more than 30 times each. keep your loads to duplicate factory black powder velocities and you will have great success. i use boolets from a rcbs mould 45-325 -?? this is a rnfp and is plain base. it is sized .458 and shoot superbly in my taylor 76.

I have read the various articles on the subject. It is comforting that my rifle has correct headspace as trimmed .45-70 brass will not work. I have read that some Uberti rifles function just fine with the cut down brass. I really do not want to trim the case rim. I did a google search looking for cases with the correct rim thickness. If anyone knows of such brass please advise. Thanks, 1886.

I purchased a box of 45-60 brass from Rocky Mountain cartridges and they had the proper rim thickness. They are a bit expensive, but if you reload, they are worth it .... and they did a nice job too, and with proper headstamping of the caliber. I also thinned rims as per my article mentioned above. That was very easy to do once I had that little metal rod made up. I have a friend who is a machinist, so it was no problem to get the rod machined, but others may have more difficulty with that aspect, so Rocky Mountain Cartridges is the way to go.

+1 on Kirk's instructions. My 1876 is a Chaparral Arms reproduction. I trimmed the brass and thinned the rims and they work just fine.

Finding the rod was the most challenging part, as I don't have any machinist friends! I went to Northern Tool & Equipment and purchased a long drill bit of the appropriate size (can't recall it off the top of my head at the moment. I cut the bit, saving the bit itself for use as a regular-sized drill bit, and took the remainder to use in my drill press to spin the brass. Worked perfectly!

Send me a PM. I have 50 45-60s that I had to thin the rim as my Uberti 76 also wouldn't close on a standard 45-70 rim. Don't need them anymore as I am rechambering to 45-75.
