Questions about Puma Mod.92 45 Colt

I'm thinking about purchasing a new Puma Mod. 92 45 colt carbine 16" with large loop lever. Would I have any problems shooting the heavy +P factory loads in this rifle. I know these loads are not recommended in some modern handguns. also what are your thoughts about the 16" barrell over the 20" or visa Versa. I really like the look of the large loop lever trapper style. I just want the gun for a fast handling, light , deep woods piece for deer & Hogs or whatever.

Since we have moved to this new forum I don't know if Paco's articles are still available, but he has one on this very sudject. As for how the rossi /Puma 92 will stand up to heavy 45lc, you won't have any problems. Rossi now chambers the 92 in 454 casull, a much higher pressure round than any book 45lc loads.

That was a shameless plug Steve

If you want a Rossi, Steve's the guy to see, the 45's are plenty strong and Steve can makem purr like a kitten.

I WOULD PICK A 20" BARREL OVER A TRAPPER EVERYDAY ANYDAY. THE LARGE LOOP LEVER IS ONLY SLIGHTLY MORE WORTHLESS THAN MAMARIES ON A STUD HORSE.

I have to agree with Terry, the 20" barrel is fast and balances better, IMHO. I read somewhere that the large loop lever was never a production item but invented for Hollywood, might explain the uselessness of it...

This one has had one of Steve's action jobs, and it the slickest lever I own. I like really short carbines or really long rifles - not much of a fan myself of the middle ground. The 4 inch difference isn't going to matter much on ballistics. It may help a bit on sight radius. It ends up being a question of balance and personal taste. Unlike Terry, I like the 16-inch barrel and the large loop. To each his own!

Welcome aboard! Hope you stay a while. Be sure to post some pictures on the one you go with! I highly - HIGHLY - recommend an action job by Steve. He can also get rid of that butt-ugly safety they feel the need to put on the new guns!

How 'bout a little insight on your ."Heavy" .45 Colt loads?

In the AM I'll be stuffin' 330 gr Lyman 457122 and Lee 340 (355 gr) FP on top of a good dose of H-110 to see how it does in my 20" barrel pre safety Rossi with the regular lever.

Mine's even wrapped so there's less "slop space" inside the loop.

Ya wont regret a 45 SRC.

Don't even need a sling, they carry like a small stick

Here is mine sandwiched between a Contender carbine and a Remmy Model 7.

I had to clip out my feet cuz they are no wheres near as sexy as Ysabels

I kinda understand what some people say about the loop, it is quite large. I would like something in between the regular loop and this one.

Someday I'll pester my friend to cut out an inch and reshape it the way I like.

come on terry you know those short barreled guns are handier. Youve just been spouting that stuff so long your starting to believe it. Id pass on the big loops myself though.

ACTUALLY LLOYD, I DO NOT BELIEVE A TRAPPER IS ONE WHIT HANDIER THAN A 20" SADDLE RING CARBINE. FURTHERMORE I DO NOT BELIEVE TRAPPERS ARE NEARLY AS WELL BALANCED AS A 20" CARBINE. THE TRAPPERS I HAVE SHOT WERE ALL BUTT HEAVY AND I FIND THAT TO BE A LESS THAN ENDEARING QUALITY IN A CARBINE.

I too have the large loop lever but swapped it over to a regular carbine - admitting I wanted a true "Rifelman's" rifle look, and I wanted a regular trapper - so won both ways - both in .44M. But I like the trapper with the large loop too...just not as much! To each their own. I vascilated before doing the swap. Glad I did...but there are some days - the one(s) folks have pic'd here look awfully nice too!

I had a trapper .45 earlier this year and one thing it does well that a 20" gun doesn't is fit in my backpack without the butt going over my head. Given some of the hiking I do for work, the shorter gun can be much handier.

The big loop doesn't do anything for me, though.

Legacy Sports has a new 3/4 loop lever that looks pretty good. Has anybody tried one yet?

You know, that lever might be good. The issue lever loop is a bit small for even my gloved hand. The big loop just works against the purpose of the gun for me.
