38-55 In A Sharps?

Post by Blaine »

Do you think that it would be a waste of a Shilo Sharps to chamber it in 38-55? I've always been interested in the caliber, and I absolutely want to get a Shilo sometime in the fairly near future..... Yea? Nay? Or would the 45-70 be better.......

It depends on what you intend to use it for. If you want to shoot Black Powder Cartridge Rifle metallic silhouette, the 38-55 will not reliably take down the rams at 500 meters. I used to have a No.1 Shiloh in 38-55 that was a very good shooter, but my Montana Roughrider in 45-100 not only shoots better, it packs a lot more punch! It's actually a bit more than needed for silhouette.

You can never go wrong with the 45-70.

The 'Little Sharps", a 7/8(?) scale rifle made by Charles Daly comes in .38-55. IMM, that would be the way to go. :D

Heck you can get it in .30-40 too IIRC. That's almost like a varmint round.

In the saddle rifle. or maybe the roughrigher,or the military carbine, it might not be to bad, but in a full blown 74 , the thing will weigh a ton.
In a 74 I'ld go with one of the bigger bores.
C Sharps's 75 in 38-55 is a nice outfit.

IMHO, Blaine I'd go with a 45-70 if you're going to buy a Shiloh. You can load down or up and do just about anything with it, silhouette, gongs, hunting or whatever. I like the 38-55, but not in a Sharps rifle.

The 38-55 is a great target round, plus it will killer deer grave yard dead. It was popular with the target shooters in the late 1800s.It that is what you are looking for then you will be happy. If not, then you will not happy

I have a Sharps Borchardt that was barreled to 38-55 in the mid-1880s by Denver gunsmith Axel Peterson that is one fine shooting rifle. I bought in in 1964 and it will stay with me until the end. The bore is pristine

I think the .38-55 would be a wonderful choice for a full sized Shiloh Sharps. A lot more comfortable to shoot with less recoil. It also would handle some pretty stout loads with no issues. I'd only find one possible drawback, and that's resale value should you ever part with it. Might be slightly less than those chambered in BPCR calibers. But I wouldn't let that stop me. I'd also choose the .38-55 if I was buying a Shiloh, and with a 32" full octagon barrel too!

Blaine, I have to agree with Mike D. and others on this. I guess it depends what you are going to use it for though. For serious long range work, the 38-55 is limited while the 45-70, 45-90, 45-110, 50-70 and 50-90 are a far better choice. The new Pedersoli 1885's feature a new fast twist rate in 38-55 to stabilize heavier 360 grain bullets. I saw them at the last SHOTSHOW. That might be another consideration.

I've seen a fair amount of ultra long range shooting during my two trips to the Billy Dixon Range in CO, and I would recommend the 45-70, 45-110 and 50-90 in a Shiloh if it were me.

Let us know what you choose to do. 8)

I should do that as the time grows closer......I hope I can commit this fall; just too many irons in the fire right this minute. I'm thinking that 500 down could prolly get one started and I hear they are a year out right now.....
