If y'all don't like that photo, then you sure don't want to see how I treat my old beater '95 .30-06 carbine.

Didn't say I didn't like the photo, I do, I think it's a poor way to treat a good rifle.

Mike, why don't you do a photo essay on your way of treating the 95 Win.

airedaleman, I'd have to dig him up to tell him and I don't think the powers that be would approve of that.

I saw that pic in a book not too long ago. Might have been in one of Venturino's books. The dude does look tough, he don't need that rifle to whoop up on me :D -------------Sixgun

A little side information, Ranger Baker was known as a crack shot and was involved in a the shooting of a lawyer named Brockman in Houston, Texas at the turn of the century. Captain Henry Ransom actually did the shooting. Jules was with Ransom when the shooting took place. Ransom was known as a little gun happy. Four shots from a 45 Colt SAA did the job. Two were in the back. Ransom was acquitted. Here is a photo of one of Jules Baker's rigs. Notice that he could take the holster off and wear it as a hide out if need be. The revolver is a Colt SAA in 32-20. Many rangers in the old days liked the 32-20 for its flat shooting ability it seems or maybe they could get off quicker shots because of the low recoil. I'm not sure. I need to look into that. :?

I have seen countless photos of Texas Rangers with their 95s held in the same way. It is almost always 1895 Winchester Carbines. I think it might have been because these carbines were issued to the rangers during this time, around WWI, they were not their personal guns as in the past. Something to think about.

That is very cool Rangerider. It's somewhat common to see the old timers holding their guns muzzle down, either in the scabbard or not. It makes me wince as well. I think some folks just fall into the catagory of those who think of firearms as mere tools that are to be replaced when worn out and think nothing of it. He might have been one of those folks....impossible to tell from a photo. A 32/20! What would Elmer say? That pistol looks like it's seen alot of life.

Just a note, since I'm a long time spur collector, take a look at his Gal-Leg spurs. Ranger Baker was a man of bling! I started collecting spurs and knives when I was very young. I would go with my dad to Swift & Co. in Fort worth to pick up his mail in the 50s. While he was reading it in his office, I would go over to the Cattle Exchange Building and watch the buyers and commission men whittle, trade knives and spurs as well as tell tall stories and play practical jokes. It has been an addiction from then on. (all except whittling)

My .30 army (30/40). When I got it 30 years ago it didnt have a rear sight. I found something that fit without D&T, but handguard wont fit over it. It shoots well.

Of course, I was taking a bit of facetious license when saying that you would not like the way my old beat up '95 is treated. I do take great care of it, but use the hail out of her. The old girl has been used the boost me up steep hillsides, hung around in the old jeep, and generally hunted in all sorts of weather. She's a tool, after all, not a beauty queen to be babied and kept in a climate controlled environment. To do that would be doing the gun a huge disservice. Keeping her active and useful, and often wet or dusty, is what makes her what she is, an 84 yr old still going strong. Her mechanics and bore are excellent, it's her "skin" that looks a bit worn after all those years. :D Image

I seldom shoot my 30-40 Krag 95 carbine; mostly because I have others that I don't want to neglect. It also hits just about the same from both ends. I do take it hog hunting a couple of times a year and would definitely like it along on a mountain lion hunt if I happen to find one. :o

Rangerider, that rig of Baker's that you show ...... do you have the extreme good fortune of owning that magnificent piece of history? If so, you are very fortunate.

No KirkD, I don't own it. I do own some Texas Ranger items that go back as far as the 1870s Frontier Battalion but not that one. I wish I did. :)

True, and I have seen the same thing in photos of Arizona Rangers. Almost always a 95 carbine. Maybe it's just a way of appearing relaxed, confident and familiar with one's arms. After all, these photos were posed to impress others.

Based on history, the Texas Rangers were very tough and most were excellent shots. One of the places to visit when in Texas is the Ranger Museum in Waco. If coming from the North on I35 just Cross the Brazos at Waco. Sorry, but I couldn't pass up the nod to Billy Walker's song. The Museum is well worth the visit.

Looks like he wasn't about to run out of ammo either. As to the muzzle resting on a rug, how many times do you see a fellow with his rifle muzzle down on the carpet in the pickup, same thing. At least he didn't have his hand over the muzzle.

Neat old photo! I noted those spurs, yep... a real dandy! But could probably whup up on any three of us! Attitudes about firearms were different, my uncle (born around 1898), handed down his 1894 Win in .38-55, used hard and put up wet on ocassion, but still in fine shape for a poor TN sharecropper's sole rifle. Dad sez it's still as good a shooter as he is. And, as Dad describes it... it was worse to come home without game less ammo, than to come home without game! Sez the hickory switches were applied with vigor for the former offense, less so for the latter!
