OT- War Between the States Part 7.

Post by Gun Smith »

"The muffled drum's sad roll has beat
The soldier's last tattoo;
No more in life's parade shall meet
The brave and fallen few.

On fame's eternal camping-ground
Their silent tents are spread
And Glory guards, with solemn round,
The bivouac of the dead."
Theodore O'Hara

Unknown soldiers at the battle of Cold Harbor were never buried, and two years later the armies returned to the same field of battle to find those who were forgotten - still waiting.

Andersonville, the most famous Confederate prison was bad, but no more so than the Union prison, Camp Douglas, Illinois, which had the highest death rate of the War, 10% of the Confederates soldiers held there died in one month.

Of 584,000 Union and Confederate soldiers wounded during the war, over 80,000 died.

The Union military telegraph corps strung more than 15,000 miles of wire during the war.

The Civil War was photographed by Mathew Brady, but it was almost 40 years before his thousands of pictures were viewed by the public.
Woodcut photo engraving was the medium used for pictures during the war itself.

Probably the safest duty during the war was that of the 3,000 U.S. Marines. Even though they made some landings on the southern coast, the majority only served as gun crews aboard ships.

The Union Army marched an average of 16 miles per day.

At the Battle of First Bull Run, or Manassas, it has been estimated that between 8,000 and 10,000 bullets were fired for every man killed or wounded.

More later.
