Hard to imagine a camera being on hand at that time when a shootin' scrape erupted. Besides, both him and the horse look way too relaxed. I'm guessing the pose.

With the glazed look in that horse's eyes, I think it had one too many beers.

There's a hole in the right arm of his sweater/jacket/whatever.The pocket on the same side is full of something. There's a rip in the right knee of his jeans. If a set up photo the clothes would be more perfect. He looks real enough.I'd say real but posed.

Looks like indoor studio lighting. Heavily retouched/painted background. Horse has seen better days.

This is the caption I found under it:

Today we feature a picture of Will Roberts. He was a train robber in the late 1800's and went by the name "Dixon". I believe that he might have rode with Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch, but I am not for sure that this is the same Will Roberts. This photograph was distributed to Pinkerton Agents who were searching for the outlaw.

Looks real to me. It also looks like he's waiting for the recoil of that S&W 500.

Hey, Isn't that Hillary Klinton's great uncle?

I say posed--the Colt has the hammer down and is not to eye level. The horse looks stuffed-----------------------Sixgun

They posed then and we pose now. I don't care, it is cool looking at these old photo's. Please keep them coming.

What strikes me is the odd stance he has on the horse. When I lean away from something off to the side of my horse like he is, I put my weight on the stirrup of the side I'm leaning back toward, I partially swivel around to face the side I'm leaning away from, and my far side leg hooks or wraps the far side of the horse keeping my bottom half firmly planted to my horse while my top half deals with whatever is coming at me from the side .... my far side leg doesn't splay way out there like that fellow's leg. To me at least, having his far side leg way out there like that makes him look like a dude. On the other hand, maybe he's just fooling around. I've fooled around plenty on a horse when things got a bit boring.

You too? I've found that when I do that I usually end up being on the ground and feeling foolish.
