32/40

Post by hondo1892 »

Hey guys I just joined here. I have a 1894 winchester rifle heading my way. It is 1920/21 vintage 32/40. I would like to know if anyone out there has any reloading experiance with this caliber. Also does anyone know what kind of preasure that the older winchester 94's need not exceed. I have found some data with highest presures listed around 29,000 cup. Can a 1920's vintage 94 handle this? I plan on using a 165 gr. seaco cast bullet. I would like to get a load worked up for deer hunting.

The 94 action design to handle pressures of the 30-30 , 32 spl , 32-40 and 38-55 for the new smokeless powder in 1894 , 29,000 psi loads a normal pressures . Unless there is a defect in gun you will have NO problems . The 32-40 and 32 spec have a 1 in 16 twist which is perfect for cast bullets . The 30-30 has a 1 in 12 with is better for jacket bullets . The 32-40 is one of the best cal for cast target shooters .

Your late vintage 1894 32-40 most likely has a nickel steel barrel. It won't be stamped where you can see it, you have to take the forend off and underneath you will see "MNS". I have several in 32-40 and the below pic is one that was made in 1921. This rifle will shoot loads in the 28,000 psi range all day long with absolutely no fear of damage. I will not do that with another I have with a low 4 digit serial number.

My standard load is 21 grains of A.A 5744 with a 175 gr. gas checked RCBS bullet sized .322. The barrel slugs out at .321. Its good for about 1700+. (Don't have my notes handy)------------Sixgun

The 32-40 is almost the sam as a 30-30 using B/P. It is a straight case and can handle the B/P pressures. When you take a long straight case and convert it to smokeless, I would suggest that you use a slow burning powder that fills up the case for more accurate loads.

I have found that to be true with my 38-55, 45-70 AND my 30-30 with the 1-12" twist.

Something I read andnever thought about before (and makes sense) is, faster burning powders in a larger case, when the rifle is at aim, the cartrdige is horizontal and the powder in the case is not against the primer. There for you get an inconsistant burn.

All I know is I have take that into consideration and so far all my loads are far more predictable.

hondo,

yes, check under your barrel. I have a 32/40 made in 1925 and it has the MNS stamp under the barrel.

I'm also about to start loading for my 32/40 also, haven't shot it yet.

I have some 5744 that I'm going to try with cast bullets and i'm going to try some 3031 with jacketed.

Good luck

tn gun runner,
what twist does your Ruger have? I have been thinking about putting a 32-40 together for 200 grain bullets and wonder if the 16" twist will stabilize them or if a 14" twist might be better?

I use the 1 in 16 Douglas . You need to keep the bullet above the sound barrier at 200 yds and 1450 fps work good . If I shot 200 mm I push to 1500 fps , It upsets the bullet returning below the sound barrier .

It looks like a 16" twist will work. With a pointed bullet too. Nice rifle and nice shooting! Were those groups shot off hand?

Thanks for the load Sixgun. Have you ever tried any Hodgen or IMR powders. Finding Accurate powder here in southeast michigan is like finding chickens with lips. I did get lucky though and picked up one can of 5744.

I've used the Unique and 4227 loads and all my cast bullet loads and get super small groups [around 1 inch] out of both powders . I've seen 2400 rings chamber , so I stayed away from it .

Hey guys I finnaly got my new shootin iron. The bore is really nice but the crown has a slight upset. Has anyone tried the tools that Brownells has for cleaning up crowns. I seen them and was thinking about getting one. Sixgun thanks for the barrel info. I removed the forarm and it had the nickel steel marking. I'll try to get some photo's posted. My next piece a Uberti 76 in 45/60. Man my wife hates gun stores. Glad I have my own mad money. Hee hee hee.

Cool. Now you've got two sets of pictures to get on the board.

I'm with ya on the Uberti '76 in 45/60. I'm working on getting one myself. And, my wife does okay at the gun stores when I'm just kicking tires. But, she doesn't get to come along when I start dealing with the man with the mules.

tn gun runner,
Nice targets. Great shooting! Thank you for sharing your load data. I use 4227 in my .30-30, .44-40 and .45 Colt (Don't have a .32-40.) Just curious. Do you position the powder prior to firing in your .32-40?
