Ranch report-success!

Success! I had just got through the gate and crossed the creek in a low part of the road. I look up to see four young deer running up over the rise to the west of the creek bottom. There is a fence to my right their left. I stopped the truck and grabbed my lever and went to the fence and squatted. I was guessing there may be a coyote or two chasing them. Sure enough as I eased up the fence so I could see better the four deer jump the fence and two coyotes were in pursuit. Male and a female. They slowed just enough to go through the barbwire fence to let me get off some easy shots. I was only 50 yards away by this time. They didn't even see me they were to zeroed in on the deer, plus there was a small mesquite tree in front of me. I got them both. The male dropped stone dead and the female took two shots. The first shot had hit the female a little to far back. I had changed my mind and took my standard truck gun an "El Tigre" 44-40. It shoots real good. That was a good start. The water is doing better but there wasn't as much build up as I had hoped for. Maybe the next rain will "getter done".

Good on ya. Moving targets even at 50 yds isn't nothing to sneeze at.

A great story with a happy ending. You can almost put yourself back in 1897 and duplicating what those boys did back then.

Not disbelieving you, but we sure would like to see some pics of the great event.

Good report "rangerider7 ". The way you told yer story makes it easy to visualize the deer being pursued and you cutting off and eliminating their threat. Sounded -- errrrrrrrrrrr read like a story right out of the old west. Good shooting!!!

Excellent report. I love your choice of rifle too. that is just way cool. congrats. Most cell phones have picture taking capabilities. You always have a camera handy if your camera has one. if it doesnt, time to trade up.

Just out of curiosity, how prolific is the coyote problem in your area? I always read, in other threads, that "we have them", but never how bad the problem is or has become.

No bounty that I know of. The problem is getting worse. When you see coyotes during the middle of the day looking for prey, there's a problem. I can sit by the barn until around dusk and they will start howling in all directions, north, south, west and east. I pick the closest pack and go set up. I have a red lens light and Foxpro electronic call for night time hunting. One day a week ago they were howling 30 minutes before dark in all directions, but each alfa started a challenge call and none of them would come in. That is unusual. It was the closest and loudest I have ever heard coyotes not to see one. The rest of the packs were right in behind them yipping and howling too. It was something to here. It sounded like a coyote riot!
